gasohol a gasoline extender made from a mixture of gasoline (90%) and
ethanol (10%; often obtained by fermenting agricultural crops or crop
wastes) or gasoline (97%) and methanol , or wood alcohol (3%).

Gasohol has higher octane, or antiknock, properties than gasoline and
burns more slowly, coolly, and completely, resulting in reduced emissions
of some pollutants, but it also vaporizes more readily, potentially

Ethanol-based gasohol in which the ethanol is made from corn is expensive
and energy intensive to produce,

(which means that the energy required to produce it, wasn't cost effective
untilthe price of gasoline production reached the $2.50/gal threshold)

and can damage rubber seals and diaphragms and certain finishes if the
ethanol is present in higher concentrations.

Since 1998, however, many American automobiles have been equipped to
enable them to run on E85, a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.
Methanol-based gasohol is also expensive to produce and is toxic and
corrosive, and its emissions produce cancer-causing formaldehyde."

Here in Texas, one is hard put to even find gasohol anymore. There are a
few places where you can find E85 and it's availability is becoming more
and more as the E85 vehicles are sold here.

Even in California, where the emmissions of gasoline AND diesel engines
are regulated by strict state laws, there is no gasohol. Because of the
strict regulations, California requires a different formula that doesn't
include alcohol.

The octane required to run a 1920s engine with a 5:1 compression ratio
didn't include lead.

The reasoning behind the 'high octane' requirement stated by this person
may be because the octane rating formula could be different from that used
here in the USA. That has yet to be determined. I'd believe a person with
a degree in chemistry and a life time in that field before I'd believe a
jerk who has to google for that info.
