my first cell phone was with bellsouth and it was called "bellsouth
mobility"... these phones had a SIM card in them that could be put in any other
phone with SIM card capability... the card carried everything... phonebook,
last outbound, last inbound, calendar, and more... i used to swap between two
or three phones all the time...

those phones were owned by the retail computer store i worked for... we were an
outlet for "bellsouth mobility"... all we did was sell the phone in the box...
the customer had to phone in to a setup number with BSM to get their account
configured and enabled... there was nothing that we could do as far as anything
else goes... i had one customer who came in crying that their phone had been
run over and they didn't know what they were going to do because they couldn't
afford another one or the setup stuff... i pulled a nice $40US phone out of the
case and asked them if they liked it... when they said yes, i calmly pulled the
battery out of their broken phone, replaced the SIM card in the new phone with
their existing one and turned the phone on... at some point i had asked them
for their cell phone number... when i turned the phone on and set it on the
counter, i excused myself and stepped into our shop area, picked up our store
phone and dialed the customer's cell number... the phone on the counter rang a
time or two and they picked it up and answered it... that's when i turned
around, walked back thru the shop door to the counter with the store phone
still in my hand and talking to them... they were quite happy to spend $40US
for a new phone and not have to worry about any more setup fees and the like...

GSM phones have this nice easy capability of switching SIM cards that the ?DMA
phones don't have...

that was back around 2000 or possibly as late as 2001... i know i was working
at that store when y2k rolled around because my BBS had had a problem that i
didn't fix until then and my BBS has been down a month or so...

BTW: Bellsouth Mobility was spun off and renamed Cingular ;)
