What probably happened, as we've seen from photographs, is that a turbine disc
of engine #2 desintegrated.
 
Pieces of this turbine disk ripped through the engine and took-out part of the
cowling, as is very visible on the photos.
 
Another piece shot upward and sliced through the wing to exit on the upper side
leaving a gaping hole. That's the part worth gold for the finder.
 
It missed one of the fueltanks by about a foot and most likely cut some of the
electrical control cables for engine #1 (the outer left one) as after landing
the crew was unable to shut it down. In order to make it quit firetrucks douzed
it with large volumes of water.
 
IMO the incident is very similar to the DC10-incident in Sioux City where a
compressor disk also desintegrated in Engine #2 (the tail engine) taking with
it plenty of the hydraulics in the vertical stabilizer. Quite some people
perished in the resulting crashlanding, but amazingly a large amount of people
survived.
 
Some sources say large quantities of oil were seeping from at least 3 Trent-900
engines on other Qantas A380s while other companies using the Trent-900 from
Rolls Royce as well don't notice that anomaly ... therefore I think it is a
hoax.
 
Qantas dispatched a 747-400 to Singapore to pick-up stranded passengers and
crew. That particular 747-400 experienced an engine failure 6 minutes after
take-off, had to equally shut down an engine, dump fuel and return.
 
These are the facts. As for the causes a lot of avenues are open:
 
* Inadequate maintenance
* Metal fatigue in that disc
* Airbubbles in that disc
* Vulcanic damage. It is said that the plane stayed away from the Merapi,
  but this could have been damage from previous passes.
* ...
 
2 things at least are clear:
 
A) This is an engine problem, the design of the A380 itself seems sound.
B) My son didn't cause it. He works on hydraulic components of the Trent900
   which weren't affected.
