Ärende: N'other one evicted from dyndns?

 MvdV> Hello Roy,

MvdV> On Saturday November 06 2010 13:15, you wrote to me:

MvdV>>> Automatically removed by dyndns. If it was not removed, a DNS
MvdV>>> query would return something other than "unknown host".

RW>> If there's no host online or the user has 'ping' shut off in his
RW>> firewall, there cannot be any other return but 'unknown host'...i.e.
RW>> dyndns.org isn't the host, the IP you're trying to ping is.

MvdV> Wrong. The attempt to ping reveals the IP number if it is in the
MvdV> dyndns.org zone file. Whether the target is on line or not.

Wrong. You just proved it to yourself by pinging my DNS server. The system
is online, but not pingable. The only way you would know that is because
the DNS server gave you the lone-star interpreted IP address. The IP isn't
updated on a daily or even weekly basis, so you don't know whether the
system is online or is languishing in a black hole. All the DNS server did
was give you the IP of a system that may be online or a system that has
been off line for a day or maybe even a week. The only time DYNDNS is
notified of a IP change is when my internet link is shut down and turned
on again. This is done automatically by a program called DeeEnEs. I can
use it to force an update, but DYNDNS considers forced updating as a
no-no.

RW>>>> I'll bet Rusty can access his account at the DYNDNS website.
RW>>>> They don't remove accounts for nothing.

MvdV>>> Wrong. If you let your free domain lapse, they do not merely
MvdV>>> remove your domain from the DNS system, they drop your entire
 MvdV>>> account. Ask Herman.

 RW>> Who's Herman?

MvdV> Herman Neut. He had it happen to him recently.

If you don't use it, then you should lose it. That makes more sense than
arbitarily dropping an account.

RW>> Of course, if you're too cheap to offer a few $ to a free service
RW>> provider, then you don't really deserve to be their customer. I'd
 RW>> drop the free-loaders too.

MvdV> The reason Herman did not update his dyndns account is that he
MvdV> moved to a paying service and doid not need dyndns any more.

See above.

RW>>>> But his 'account' there still exists.

MvdV>>> Not if it was a free account.

RW>> Has he logged into it lately. Cleaning house isn't unheard of,
RW>> especially when the service offered is free and no one has bothered
 RW>> to use it.

MvdV> That is what I have been saying all along.

RW>> Although a small, one time, donation keeps your account alive
 RW>> indefinately.

MvdV> The attractive thing about dyndns - at least for some - is that it
MvdV> is a free service. If one is prepaired to pay - like me - why go to
MvdV> dyndns? There are lots of DNS providers all over the world that do
MvdV> not require that one follows their interpretation if US law.

Each of those others will follow what law they live under. There's no
difference in that whether it's a Canadian server or a Dutch server. When
a known pirate uses a system that is obligated to work with the law that
they live under, pirates will be removed from even the Canadian server, if
there is copyright law similar to the US.

MvdV>>>>> Call that speculation if you want, but this is perfectly
MvdV>>>>> valid as a scientific method.

RW>>>> Actually it shows us that you don't know exactly how DYNDNS
 RW>>>> works.

MvdV>>> What it shows is that YOU do not know how it works.

RW>> LOL! I'm a money paying customer of DYNDNS and have been for the
RW>> last ten years. I know how it works.

MvdV> So you do knot how how it works for thsoe who use the free service.

I used the free service before I paid to support DYNDNS's service. I liked
it so much that I thought I'd help them out with a cash donation, not
unlike those who pay for software.

RW>>>> You've taken the Pirates word for it that its a corrupt entity,

MvdV>>> I have taken nobody's word for it, I did my own research.

RW>> You can't know all of the ins and outs without having an account and
 RW>> actually using it...

MvdV> The same goes for you. You can not know the ins and out of a free
MvdV> account if you do not have one.

Mine was free, until I upgraded it with a donation. I have more free
services for that one-time donation than a mere DNS server.
