Apartment buildings have an 'outgoing' mail box where the resident (or
anyone else for that matter) can deposit outgoing mail. Obviously the box
is locked and only the mail-worker can access it with his key. This is
also true for many business complexes. Also, if your business has mail to
go out, the mail-worker person will take that from your receptionist in
the lobby, when he/she delivers your daily mail.

PS - where we live, we have the option of taking the outgoing mail to the
Post Office (haven't seen a street corner mail box in years) or leaving it
in our mail box on a post at the road. (the mail box has a red flag on it
to inform the mail-worker that there is out-going mail in the box)

If the mail is important and has to be there in a timely manner, then we
take it to the PO, if not, we leave it for the mail-worker to pick up. It
really doesn't matter, as the Post Office doesn't time-stamp our mail
until 5pm anyway.
