Tsk, tsk... all that effort for such a miniscule reward... cut off one head of
the hydra, and another hundred grow back.

Torrents were yesterday... the real action nowadays is in the file sharing
sites (Rapidshare and all the rest). Naturally they are being attacked by the
content industry too, but by the time they go offline - and they surely will
with time - there'll be another alternative that'll be even harder to put
offline.

It's fascinating to watch the developments and the frantic efforts to stop
piracy by every means _except_ learning from the pirates and offering good,
legal quality for reasonable prices (no DRM, prices _much_ lower than for
CDs/DVDs in a store since there are no expenses for production, distribution
and marketing). Steve Jobs has made a nice start, and naturally has been quite
successful - but the stuff he sells is still DRM crippled, often still too
expensive, and thus not comparable with what the pirates offer. Even so, his
success should really show the content powers-that-be how they could continue
to make good money without throwing a lot of it away cutting off the heads of a
hydra. You can make a lot of money with low margins and high volume, as Henry
Ford once demonstrated. Nowadays, we need a Henry Ford in the content industry.

P.S. Most of the pirated material is put online by private persons and groups
only looking for the "fame". Only a small portion comes from groups or
organizations that charge money - and real "pirates" look down on such groups
and organizations as true thieves who don't deserve anything better than the
prison terms they get when caught.

P.P.S. None of the above is particularly "insider information". All you have to
do is Google around a little and read enough. But apparently a lot of people
don't take the trouble to do that.
