===============================
HI Bob,

On Sat 2038-Dec-11 16:59, Bob Ackley (1:300/3) wrote to Ward Dossche:

Still can be for those who are smart enough to protect
themselves, and write their own material.

I maintain that what has been harmed in all this is the
quality of the works produced, both the audio quality of the finished product
because of the compress file format, and
the audio quality even before the compression. FOlks are
skipping an important step, which can often overcome some of the weaknesses of
the lossy compression. But, good
mastering labs aren't cheap, these craftspeople demand their payment for
obvious reasons. Back in the midwest I had a
good control room I'd take finished mixes for clients to for mastering, but
even with two sets of ears on the material,
and a darned good room this wasn't a mastering lab, but a
studio with a better control room than mine.

Mastering engineers are starting to recognize, and push
clients toward different masters for different distribution
chains, i.e. one for the put it up on the net as mp3 files
chain, another for the cd that will be played by the club dj if destined for
that market, a third for the folks to listen to on their player at home, but
actual 44.1 khz 16 bit.
But, the clients won't spend the money for throwaway
giveaway product.

Mastering is even more necessary for the stuff that's
recorded in somebody's back bedroom on their computer.
Unless you're working from an acoustically tuned control
room then you can't create a product that will translate
well to a wide variety of playback systems and environments. This means people
create mixes that are either fatiguing to
listen to or virtually unlistenable on some playback systems or in some
environments.tHis touches on a lot of
disciplines, engineering; psychoacoustics, etc. etc. tHis
may not be rocket science, the production of recordings of
music that is, but one has to either have some knowledge
from a variety of disciplines going in or have the work
polished by someone who does before releasing it to the
public.
This then leads to the fact that music listening for the
sake of music listening is an activity rarely engaged in by
average folks anymore.

Both the RIAA and the folks such as napster have essentially killed off a large
part of the industry by not finding ways
forward. AS one who's made the bulk of my living in support services for this
industry I curse both sides pretty much
equally.

A lot of us here are from the generation of the progressive
rock folks. So let me ask you folks this:

When was the last time you actually kicked back in your
chair with a friend or two and actually listened to a new
album or cd release by one of your favorite artists?

I'd venture a guess that it's been a long time. NOwadays
music is a disposable commodity, heard in the background
while you go about the rest of your life. Except for folks
in the jazz and classical world who are serious music
listeners average folks don't listen to music for the sake
of enjoying music as they once did.

even I don't do that as much. If there's something I've
reacquired for my collection since my after the hurricane
fire and I want to hear it, I might put on that single song, but it's rare when
I sit down just to listen to music.

Regards,
           Richard
