Not this far south anyway - it's too cold for them to function properly.

Sadly, I dont think that has much to do with it, just that an anti-virus would
eventually be bred into the young resulting in an autoimune capapbility. IE it
was only ever a short term solution to the problem.

A second person denied transplant coverage by Arizona under a state budget cut
has died, with this death "most likely" resulting from the coverage reduction.
The patient died after earlier being removed from the list for a liver
transplant needed because of hepatitis C.
Arizona reduced Medicaid coverage for transplants on Oct. 1 under cuts included
to help close a shortfall in the state budget enacted last spring.

Don't gloat too soon. The "spend all your resources on the war on terrorism"

that you demand -- has spread globally like wild fire and will reach even your

WD> Am I glad I'm not sbjected to this kind of lunacy.
Well... unfortunately, things like this can happen to you in the EU too, if not
for budget reasons, then because there are so few people willing to serve as
organ donors. The only certain (and relatively inexpensive) way to get a
transplant is to take a nice visit to India or China (maybe Vietnam nowadays,
too), where the excellent doctors will treat you as a premium patient for less
than you would pay for basic medical care here in Europe - air fare and hotel
bills thrown in for free.
Naturally - horrors, horrors - completely illegal in the EU, but if you're
alive instead of dead, that won't bother you much.
The only difference between our situatiuon and that in Arizona is that theirs
gets into the news.

Overhere, Scott ... in the civilised world ... budget concerns are not an issue
to decide whether or not the system can afford tranplants.
The system is set up as such that it can and will afford them ... even if the
person requiring it is a gutter-dweller.

With Arizona being overrun by illegal allens, they have to put more money
towards enforcing that problem, because the US Government isn't doing it's job
in keeping the border secure.
WD> The patient died after earlier being removed from the list for a

Most people who suffer from Hc get it from using drugs intravenously. Dirty
needles come into play there. Not much sympathy for drug users in government.

Well, most states are doing that because of the recession. The Prez and his
litter ran up the deficit so much that they can't afford to give the states the
money they used to get for this. California is on the verge of bankruptcy and
is increasing all kinds of taxes and fees in an attempt to keep itself afloat.
This is not unlike Greece or Ireland.
Their problem will be when it comes to a vote to bail them out, they may not
get a positive vote on it. If you want to see what the US government will be
like in a few years, all you have to do is take a look at the most liberally
run state (California) in the union.
One day your bank account is worth $100,000 and when you wake up the next day,
it's only worth $10,000 in Patriot Dollars.
WD> Am I glad I'm not sbjected to this kind of lunacy.

used to do.

There is a waiting list for people who need a liver transplant. The
availability of organs is so low that those needing one are put on a list.
The list is supposed to be by 'need' first. But not always, as some people with
money can buy their way to the top of the list. One such person was Steve Jobs,
Apple Computer guru and Jim Nabors, a TV celebrity here. One such list here:

It must be nice to live someplace where medical professionals cheerfully work
for nothing, medical suppliers provide those supplies free of charge, and
utility
companies (and cities) don't charge hospitals and clinics for power and water.
The bottom line, Ward, is that somebody, someplace is paying for that care.
Including paying the help, paying for utilities, medical supplies, equipment
and
pharmaceuticals. I seriously doubt that everybody in Belgium who needs an
organ
transplant gets one, or FTM that everybody in Belgium who needs some expen$ive
medical
procedure/intervention gets it. I suspect that even those countries that
(supposedly)
provide free or low cost care to their citizens have similar stories - they
just don't
make the news because the media is (or isn't) pushing a specific agenda - which
in
the case of the above story it was.

Nope - I don't ride a Harley so these fellows don't want to socialise with my

I didn't suggest otherwise, I questioned the relevancy of the budget cuts to
the loss of the transplant and subsequent death.
Are they simply saying the deceased needed the transplant because of hepatitis,
or lost the transplant because of hepatitis? If the former, why bother
mentioning it at all? If the latter, surely the organ went to someone else?
Like I said, budget cuts have nothing to do with anything unless organs are
getting wasted. So, are they? Seems like that would be the bigger story, so
I'm suspicious.
Regardless, organs are still more limited than money and stubbornly wasting
them on substandard recipients as a matter of misguided fairness is not the
mark of a mature society, IMO. I'm a donor and if I had the choice as to who
gets my bits, it certainly wouldn't be people with other problems as long as
there are more suitable patients waiting.

In Belgium they have a law that makes anyone a donor unless he/she opts out. As
a result, there is no shortage of donor organs.
A proposal to do the same thing in The Netherlands was blocked by the
Christians. So... Dutch patients go to Belgium for a hearth transplant...

That's honesty. I've been wondering when the "New Dollar" (one new doller = 100

I don't think your statement about 'most Hc patients" is true - at least not
any longer. I will test positive for it but have never had it (or hepatitis
anything).
15 years ago when I worked in an Omaha hospital, all patient care personnel

That is correct.
I also carry a donor card which already has information about my tissue type to
speed-up the proces should I come to die of natural causes. Plus I have been
entered in a bone-marrow donor data-base with tissue type determined.
Especially the bone-marrow data base is something all people should do. Success

INdeed, remember that this happened to those friends of mine close to 40 years

month or so, was pregnant as well, did the big A word at a clinic. DIdn't know

The problem on this side of the pond is that government (at all levels) is
taking between
65 and 75 oercent of people's income - NOT including Obamacare. And many of
the governments at all levals are running deficits; California has been
technically bankrupt
for years, so is New York City - and those two localities have among the
highest tax rates
in the nation. We won't get into the US government's deficit and multitrillion
dollar debt.
FWIW the biggest single item in the US government budget is interest on the
national debt.
The budgets of the Defense Department and HHS (Social Security/welfare) are
both considerably smaller.
Note that the debt has gone from about two trillion dollars to nearly five
trillion in the past
ten years; that crushing burden isn't going to be repaid, ever, and anybody
that buys US Treasury debt instruments is an idiot, My opinion, of course. It
took the Spendocrats nearly
seventy years to run up the first two trillion in debt, and only ten more years
to more than double it.
Also FWIW the US government has announced that in 2011 is cutting workers'
"contributions" to Socialist Security from 6.2 percent of gross income to 4.2
percent (plus a like amount from
the employers which doesn't appear on people's pay stubs). Great, the system
is
going broke and they *reduce* its income. 2009 was the first year that
Socialist Security
benefits paid out exceeded "contributions" coming in - all that surplus that's
been accumulating since 1935 is invested - by law - in the US national debt,
and no place else;
there is no "Social Security Trust Fund" of money saved up by the workers and
never has been. That difference between benefits and "contributions" will only
get bigger.

Unfortunately true, true also the fact that many people have an aversion to
organ donation, also true that in some countries (including Germany) you have
to opt IN to organ donation, not opt OUT if you don't wish that. That
automatically reduces the organ supply drastically - thanks to misguided ideas
of ethics and claimed religious fervor (either true or used as an excuse).
SL> I'm a donor and if I had the choice as to who gets my bits, it

I'm a donor, too (with a card I carry everywhere in my billfold), and don't
particularly care what if anything from me is used after my death. I just
object to hospitals and transplantation teams making a profit on _my_ organs
(donated for free), but that's something nobody can prevent as long as the
politicians don't want to.
By the way, I see nothing wrong in selling organs such as kidneys from living
persons who need the money, as long as the loss does not affect the health of
the person involved. I know all about the ethics arguments, but when it comes
down to the bottom line, some poor people would rather eat with one kidney than
starve with two, one of which is unnecessary for normal health. It's a little
like child labor in places where the income of the child is the only thing
between a family and starvation. It's easy to be against such things if you're
healthy and well-fed yourself.

Regretfully, that's a natural consequence of religious extremism and
exaggerated ethics concepts: transplant tourism. But naturally only for those
who are well off financially, the poor are just expected to wait - and if
necessary die, for the religious beliefs of others.
But don't think such stuff is limited to Christians - as far as I know, Muslims
also require burial of a "whole" body. In such questions, I personally think
religion should be eliminated.
Or, as an alternative, nobody without an organ donor ID (issued prior to the
illness in question) may receive a transplant. Now _that_ would really generate
some heat among those who claim "religious" reasons for not being an organ
donor. I suspect that many such people would suddenly discover that their
religion isn't more important than their life.

How true. The hell with "romance". No wonder the divorce rates are shooting up
- all people look at nowadays are the technical details of "love". What a
paradise we had when there was only syphillis and gonorrhea to worry about.
Maybe that's nature's way of eliminating the human species.

I wish I could call you a fool and an idiot for that, but I fear you may be
pretty close to right. My only thought is how stupid I was not to buy gold when
the price was around $200 an ounce - and me so skeptical about the value of
paper currency. It's hell when you don't follow your own instincts.

Unfortunately, you as a person may well not benefit. However, others might. At
least that may be a comforting thought.

I could see that in Germany, but in the States? Do you meanwhile have a 20%
sales tax and does gasoline cost $6.85 a gallon (= 3.78 liters)? That's our
situation in Germany.
Do all welfare people get $438 per person plus housing costs (within
government-approved limits) per month? Unlimited in time? They do here.
Do you pay $520 a month for private health insurance? That's what my bill in
2011 would be if I didn't somehow work around it with various government
subsidies.
Is your pension around $900 a month? Mine is.
Frankly, I think you have it better than you think.

The difference between the two is that the Democrooks want to turn this country
into an authoritarian socialist state and the Republicrooks want to turn this
country
into an authoritarian fascist state. AFAIC there's little difference between
the two.
