Ärende: ethanol

 RZ> In 80s most cars in Brazil were made to burn pure ethanol. Today here

     My car is a "flex" car and designed to run on anything upto I believe
     E30.  It clearly states in the manual not to use more than 30% alcohol.
     I'd also be interested in knowing a bit more on how they determine
     their percentages at the racks, where they load the trucks with the
     gasoline.  I know for a fact after reading the fuel invoices coming
     in the papers rarely added up to 10% when they claimed to be E10 ethanol.
     Combine that with the fact that pretty much no gas station pumped out
     100% of their gasoline from the tanks before getting a shipment of
     ethanol, nor do they ever allow their tanks to run completly empty.
     With this in mind and the fact that the trucks don't deliver a fixed
     percentage of alcohol to gas ratio, it's quite hard to tell exactly
     what your actually pumping into your vehichle, unless you have some
     kind of test strips designed to report the percentage of alcohol
     present.  Even then, based upon my experience checking water in
     the tanks using the various enthonal paste, I'd say even then
     its likely your not going to get accurate results.  The paste to
     check for water and phase seperation used to allways show a phase
     seperation on the bottom 3/8" or so of the tank when we had 3/8" of
     water.  When the guys would come to pump out the water, they'd say
     they couldn't find any water.  The state would come by and say they
     found 1/4" of water....  We'd check it the next day and it'd report
     no water what soever.  The paste for regular gasoline was really
     accurate.  The paste for ethonal is so finicky, getting proper
     results is next to impossible.  Even if you can get accurate results,
     determining the difference between the "brown" and "dark yellow" is
     not the easiest for people with good eyes, let alone someone who
     allready has a problem seeing.  On Sargel it's white, red, and I
     think Gold, which is a little easier to tell, but even then, very
     finicky at best.  Basically the paste is great if used in a lab under
     control conditions, but should never be used anywhere there is a normal
     climate with rain, moisture, humidity, air, etc.

     All I've seen is E10 around here, just anough for the stations to get
     their kick-backs from the government...  Conoco announces clearly on
     their signs "We sell only Gasoline, no alcohol" which technically they'll
     probably get sued, because if I'm not mistaken they do sell beer inside
the
     store, though I realize what their saying....
