RW>> One of the big differences is that the US gave aid to the slaves who
RW>> were freed, if they wanted it, while the Brazilians gave none. The
RW>> US also offered free passage and even bought a country for those who
RW>> would move there. None were so foolish as to go back to a place that
RW>> enslaved them or their parents in the first place.

RB> Actually, that's not quite right. Quite a number of former American
RB> slaves actually did emigrate to Liberia (which, incidentally, wasn't
 RB> "bought"),

On the contrary, they bought a place where they could settle. Sorry that
what I said wasn't clear.

That settlement of freed slaves from the US in what is today Liberia began
in 1822; by 1847, the Americo-Liberians were able to establish a republic.

RB> and afterwards formed the ruling class of the place. They
RB> were eventually overthrown by the natives.

Yeup.

RW>> Those Brazilian slaves who were uneducated, which was all of them,
RW>> had to find jobs and fend for themselves in a country that loathed
RW>> them. Kinda like your aborigines were.

RB> The strange thing is the fact that there's such racial mixing in
RB> Brazil compared to the States, and (at least from what I hear and
RB> have seen on TV and in movies) so little onus on being black or
 RB> mulatto.

Brazilian white 53.7%, mulatto (mixed white and black) 38.5%, black
6.2%...

A lot more white than you think.

RW>> It wasn't always acceptable. It was only acceptable in the south
RW>> when niggers were slaves. But that wasn't the US per se' - it was
RW>> the Confederate States of America that you should be speaking of
RW>> when it comes to slavery.

RB> Actually, the language has changed quite a bit, even in my lifetime.
RB> The word "nigger" wasn't as isolated or regionally limited as you
RB> write, but was not used in polite society even when I was a boy.
RB> However, the word "negro" _was_, and up to perhaps the 1970s or 1980s
RB> was a perfectly normal and neutral word to describe what now is
RB> politically correctly known as a "black" - although many "blacks" are
 RB> far from black.

We called our own black players niggers in the locker room and on the bus
to high school sporting events out of town...but that was then. They knew
we weren't serious and they were ok with it. We didn't have segregated
schools like other places though. We did have a segregated community of
sorts, they and those who were termed 'white trash' lived on the east side
of the river and the well off whites lived on the west side.

RB> Naturally, such words are interpreted differently, depending on
RB> whether a white person or a black person uses them. A white person
RB> can insult a black person nowadays by calling him/her a "negro",

I don't know how...negro is Spanish for black, which they know practically
from birth.

RB> something that I still find perfectly neutral and as non-insulting as
RB> the term "white" instead of "caucasian".

On a lab test report, where blood is drawn and analyzed, there is a space
for eGFR African-American and another for eGFR Non-African-American
concerning an amount in that sample of >60 ml/min/1.73m2. I asked my
doctor's aide (she's black) what the difference was. She looked at my
report and she said that either of the numbers, 45L or 54L would be normal
for her, if she didn't have kidney desease. The L in those numbers means
low, and the former was the non-african american number, apparently out
of range for both. And the difference is genetics.

RB> On the other hand, a black can often call another black a "nigger"
RB> without either one batting an eyelash.

That's been going on since they learned to speak English. 'Sucka' was also
a name used by blacks for a white baby who was suckled by a black woman.
And now it means an entirely different thing.

RB> Such are the times we live in.
