            APNIC runs out
            IPv4 depletion, milestone 2

Last Friday, 15 April 2011, Asian Pacific Regional Internet Registry,
APNIC announced their free pool of IPv4 addresses had dropped below
one so called /8. Or just over 16 million addresses. From then on IPv4
addresses in the Ausian Pacific region will be severely rationed. Each
APNIC member - present or future - will get ONE /22 or 1024 addresses
and that is it. For all intents and purposes this means the tank is
empty. They are flying on fumes.

Earlier this year, on the third of Februari, IANA announced that the
global free pool was exhausted. From then on RIR's would have to make
do with what they got, no more refills from the global pool. That was
milestone #1. It was expected that APNIC would be the first to run
dry, but few expected it to happen so soon. Apparently there was a
profound last minute rush. Anyway, this is milestone #2 in the process
of IPv4 address exhaustion. New users in the Ausian Pacific region
will very soon be told that they can not have a globally routeble IPv4
address any more. The implecation is that any servers they wish to run
will only be accessible via IPv6.

Will this affect FidoNet? Probably not right away. FidoNet was never
prominently present in Asia, Zone 6 has been dead for years and new
nodes are not to be expected. Australia is different, but AFAIK no new
sysops have emerged there either recently, so for the moment the
damage is limited. That assumes that existing internet connections
that have a globally routeble IPv4 address will keep it. Even so, a
sysop in Australia may lose his IPv4 connection if he changes ISP.
Also that existing connection will not be affected may be a false
assumtion. ISP's may decide that an IPv4 address is too precious a
resource to not milk it. They may put everyone who is not willing to
pay a hefty extra fee behind a NAT. Of course without the possibility
of forwarding incoming ports to any specific connection. If that
happens on a large scale, it will affect FidoNet in a serious way as
sysops in such a situation wil no longer be able to receive incoming
calls via IP.

The next milestone will be when the European Regional Registry,
RIPE-NCC runs out. That will probably be in the second half of this
year. When exactly is anyones guess. Maybe as late as Christmas,
possible as early as August.

It is time to get ready for IPv6. What we need is someone who writes
an IPv6 capable implementation of Binkp. Who is going to do it?
