Ärende: End the war on drugs!
=============================

BA>>> Actually you just confirmed my point, Roy. This country is
BA>>> jailing people faster than it can build prisons.

RW>> That doesn't happen in Texas and we have more people in prison than
RW>> California. It doesn't cost us an arm and a leg to keep them
RW>> there, like it does in California. The cause of those costs are
RW>> the unionized prison workers, who're paid as well as a company CEO
 RW>> elsewhere in the states.

BA> Texas has also executed more prisoners than any other state in recent
 BA> history.

That's what the law calls for. Can't help it if the majority of the people
insist on following the letter of the law. Me included.

BA> Apparently Texas has been more successful in building prisons fast
BA> enough to keep up with demand. OF course, Texas doesn't have many
BA> left-wing judges, certainly not as many as California.

We have a few more than you think. They're sometimes culled out by their
own illegal activities though. Two south Texas counties along the Mexican
border are run by a liberal bunch who are always having problems with
state law enforcement.

BA>>> Your right wing hero Arpaio in Arizona was and probably still is
BA>>> caging his prisoners in tents surrounded by barbed wire.

RW>> You forgot to mention that they work and sleep outside under a
 RW>> tent. I say good for him. One thing he proved by doing that is;
RW>> there are very few repeat prisoners.

BA> I'm sure that's true. Trying to work under a dark tent in 100+F
BA> temperatures is not something I'd want to experience.

Well, it's not exactly dark, as they're lit up pretty well. And they're
not exactly tents, per se'. More like a tarp overhead with open sides for
ventilation. And nobody works there, they just stay there at night. Work
is outside the compound.

BA> I spent about a month in Alamogordo, NM, in July and every single
BA> day I was there the outside afternoon temperature in the shade was
 BA> above 105F.

Arizona heat is a bit different than Alamagordo. It usually doesn't cool
off very much at night in July. I think Alamagordo is more like El Paso
which has a bit of humidty to it, but the temps go down after the sun
sets.

BA> Trying to sleep in a dark (olive drav) tent in 80F or higher
BA> temperatures isn't any fun either.

It's not meant to be a vacation.

BA> I had to do that for two months when I was at Da Nang, RVN - of
BA> course the humidity at Da Nang is much higher than that in Arizona,
 BA> and it's a lot farther south.

Actually, the closer to the equator you get, the hotter it is. But I've
slept in 95% humidity at 99 degrees and it was hot, but we didn't know
what AC was in those days. Best we could hope for was an afternoon at the
movies.

BA> Anyplace else on the planet keeping people outside in those
BA> conditions would be called torture, or at the very least abuse.

A lot of people have made that claim...even those who've been a guest in
that place. But, what a great incentive to never return.
