Ärende: End the war on drugs!
=============================

You know. After having quit for 20 years, I'm just beginning to enjoy the
fresh lit smell of tobacco, again. Never thought I'd like it again.

RW>> One other ingredient was added that made the smoke more lethal than

RB> "Lethal"? Never saw anyone keel over from smoking a cigarette, but

How about several.

RE: B&W documents and their content...

The first page of a file memo dated November 1, 1988 (probably from B&W's
law firm in Louisville), provides the following nonexhaustive
classification of nontobacco materials that might be found in cigarettes:

    flavors
    sugars
    humectants
    casings or sauce materials
    insecticides
    herbicides
    fungicides
    rodenticides
    pesticides
    water conditioners
manufacturing machine lubricants and other chemicals which come in
contact with the tobacco and may leave residues on the tobacco {1324.01}

Later on at this page, they speak of one herbicide that helps to increase
the amount of nicotine in a growing tobacco plant's leaves. The herbicide
is used to kill the 'suckers' that the plant produces as it grows. Of
course the herbicide is toxic...

RB> Just remember, I'm a chemist with experience in toxicology, and
RB> regard the talk about cigarette "addiction" as a mere excuse to make
RB> people who don't have the willpower to kick the habit feel better -

With the increase in nicotine, the tobacco companies expect their
product's users to become addicted. But there are some people, like you
and me, who have more than enough will power to overcome the addiction
and quit smoking.

RB> "Oh, I'm addicted - it's not that I have no willpower". I know this
RB> particular myth is very popular in the States, but I'm still of the
RB> old school that differentiates between a habit and physical
 RB> addiction.

There are both in smoking. When I quit, it took nearly two years to get
over the habit of reaching in my breast pocket for my pack of smokes. I
don't think I ever had an addiction, as most of my cigarettes went up in
smoke while in the ash tray. I may have gotten the first and last puff, or
a couple in between too.

RB> Plus, I stopped smoking twice without any particular "withdrawal"
 RB> symptoms.

I did too. First time it was for 3 years, second time it was for 10
years...but I always enjoyed smoking, so I went back to it for another ten
years before I quit for the final time.

RB> And even watched my mother, a strong-willed person if there
RB> ever was one, and a life-long (heavy) smoker - abruptly stop smoking
RB> when she was in her late 60s or early 70s. I wouldn't have believed
RB> it possible, as I couldn't remember her without a cigarette as long
RB> as I had lived up to that point - but she did it, and never smoked
RB> again up to her death by accident (a fall).

Sometimes that's the only way people can quit smoking.
