Ärende: character sets
======================

At the time, I was (and still am) using OS/2. I now use the Windows version of
Golded, accessing the mailbase over an internal network.

I'm not sure, but think GoldED was originally designed for DOS, so I don't
really understand your problems - unless they were due to the different
character sets used in DOS and Windows.

MV> It kept hard crashing my system.

Whoops - that wasn't it either. Naturally, I nave had any such problems, but I
never used GoldED with DOS either. For that matter, I never used a fido editor
with a mailbase with DOS at all.

MV> I also tried MsgEd, but that did not meet my expectations either.

MsgED is a good editor and many people like it - particularly under linux - but
compared to timED and GoldED, it just didn't appeal to me.

MV> It was only when I said goodbye to DOS and switched to Windows that I
MV> got Golded to work properly. In hindsight it was probably in
MV> incompatibility with Novell DOS.

Probably. I think if I ever was involved in fido using DOS, it must have been
with some kind of an OLR instead of an editor with mailbase. But I can't
remember my pre-point days too well.

MV>>> Now how many times do I have to tell you: US American is the
MV>>> exception.

RB>> Not here.

MV> Define "here".

Fidonews.

RB>>>> Dammit, this is an English-language echo,

MV>>> And so evryone must "Anglify" their names? So why do you not insist
MV>>> on writing my name as "Michael" or "Mike". That *is* the English
MV>>> equivalent you know...

RB>> Because I don't have to use special characters to write your name.

MV> That's pure co‹ncidence.

No, that's a fact. And although your diacritical dots above the "i" above are
correctly shown here, they aren't used in English. Waste of time on your part
to push the matter.

MV> The Dutch 'ch' is not two distinct characters, it is a diphtong that
MV> is unique to the Dutch language. My guess is that from the regulars
MV> here, only Ward and possibly Joe know how to pronounce it without
MV> being told. It is almost unpronounceable for non native Dutch
MV> speakers. Try this one:

MV> "Zeven schele geitjes met scheefgegroeide gewrichten, gingen gezellig
MV> samen googelen in Scheveningen".

Umgawa, white man, as we used to say when Tarzan was visiting.

RB>> Why insist on such ridiculous comparisons when you know very well
RB>> they have nothing to do with the subject?

MV> It is not at all ridiculous and it has everything to do with the
MV> subject. My Ducth name is unpronounceable in English. So is Björn's.

But yours is spellable, Bjorn's isn't.

MV> The technical problems were solved 15 years ago. All *you* have to do
MV> is remove that automatic translation of ö into oe.

And, to favor one person with a hangup on his special character, disadvantage
all those who then see the character as a graphic or lines? No way.

Cheers, Bob
