Of course they are. You are using the WWindows version of Golded, for which
code page 850 is the default. My message was encoded with CP850, so of course
it is displayed correctly.

Not in your version of English. As has been pointed out by others, there is not
a single globally agreed version of English. There are many. In the version
that I use, the diaeresis is used.

Fortunetely you are not my boss. So I decide for myself what I find worthwhile
to spend time on.

It is. Look here: Björn. There, I spelled his name.

It is only unspellable for the Luddites that insist on limiting themselves to
US ASCII only.

ASCII only however was already passé when FidoNet saw the light. In 1985 all
computers for home use already had some extended charactar set that included
the Latin extensions such as accents and tremas.

Already in 1985, every home computer could display an 'ö'.

And so to please a very small minority who is too lazy or too incompetent to
properly configure his system to display an 'ö', you punish everyone! Because
that is what happens. You saddle everyone with the incorrect representation of
Björn's name.
