Ärende: Another Euro in jail
============================
Hello Robert,

On Tuesday July 19 2011 11:02, you wrote to me:

 MV>> As I told you:

MV>>>> That is because the airline wants to make sure you get IN at the
MV>>>> other side, so they so not have to take you back on their cost.

RB> The point, dear Michiel, is not _why_ you need a passport, but the
RB> fact that you can't board a plane for another country without it

The point is that you do not need to go by plane if you wish to leave a
country.

MV>>>> But there are other ways to leave a country than by commercial
 MV>>>> airline.

MV>> For example: by car, on foot, by boat or by private airplane.

 RB> If you're desperate enough.

Thousand of people leave a country that way each day. Are they all desperate?

RB> But of course, that would make you an internationally wanted person.

That depends.

Wanted for what? leaving the US without a passport? Hardy a crime outside the
US? Keep in mind that he is NOT in jail and that his bail has been returned.
Aksing another country to arrest him for something that the asker himself did
not consider serious enough to keep him in custody for, is a bit farfeched.

RB> I've already mentioned the consequences elsewhere.

Consequence that you greatly overestimate. Where is that famous movie maker
Roman Polansky?

RB>>> And Strauss-Kahn hardly has another option than to fly back to
RB>>> France, assuming he can't swim the Atlantic.

MV>> He could hire a private plane and fly to St Martin. That is a
MV>> little Island in the Caribian. Or he could get there by boat.

 RB> You'te talking pure theory.

Of course. I theorised on what he COULD do, not what he WOULD do. I said he
would just stay in the US until the case is dropped or he is aquitted.

MV>> Or... he could go to Mexico and go to the French embassy saying he
 MV>> "lost" his passport.

RB> Are you kidding? Strauss-Kahn, who's been on the front page of every
RB> newspaper in the hemisphere, and he just walks in and claims he lost
 RB> his passport?? Get real.

So wuould could they do? No French embassy anywhere in the world is going to
deny a request for asylum to a French citizen, no matter what.

RB>>> Whatever the reason, without a passport he can't leave the
 RB>>> country.

 MV>> Yes, he can.

RB> OK, he can sneak out in the trunk of a car and be a hunted criminal
RB> the rest of his life.

For breaking what law outside the US?

RB> You might do something like that, even if you thought you might well
RB> be acquitted in the trial to follow, but I doubt if someone as
 RB> prominent as Strauss-Kahn would.

I never said he WOULD...

MV>> Who says he can not leave France. That would only be an issue if
MV>> the US issued an international arrest warrant that was recognised
MV>> by the countries DSL wanted to go.

RB> PLEASE don't be so naive, Michiel. The guy is too well known to risk
 RB> something like that.

Or maybe he is too well known for any government to try to just let some
undercover agents grab him and "unofficially" extradite him to the USA.

MV>>>> And of course he would not have a problem to enter France
 MV>>>> without a passport.

RB>>> If he could get there without one. But he can't.

MV>> I am sure he can if he wanted.

RB> Buy a forged one, maybe.

No, WITHOUT one.

RB> But the French are not about to issue second passports to people who
RB> original was claimed by the judicial authorities of another country
RB> pending trial for an offence that is also a crime in France.

The French do not extradite their own citizens. So what else can they do than
to let him into France and try him there for whatever charges remain?

 RB> That idea is ridiculous.

Not as ridiculous as you think.

Cheers, Michiel
