                              FIDONET HISTORY

     25 years ago, FIdonews VOlume 3 issue 33.

     An  article on a theme which would reappear regularly in the pages of
     FIdonews. That theme was the bad name  bbs  systems get  from  those
     who conduct illegal activity using them. In this case,  the  subject
     is  a  letter  to the editor  of INfoworld  magazine.  Allen  MIller,
     the coordinator for the Cincinnati area net took issue with an article
     published  in INfoworld stating that  a  bulletin  board specializing
     in pirated software was part of Fidonet, and gave an explanation of
     what FIdonet is and does. the recurring theme of better positive
     publicity for FIdo was one of  the major driving  forces  behind  the
     creation of Ifna at the recent convention in Colorado SPrings,
     COlorado  which  took  place that year.

     Back  in those days the 5.25 floppy disk was the mainstay of the
     computer world.  An  article  by  MIke  Guffy  discusses getting good
     value for money spent when purchasing 5.25 inch floppies.

     TOm JEnnings the editor states he's putting out the issue  a bit early
     so that he can be off to the FIdonet convention.

     David  French,  the  Fidonews  versions list compiler/editor solicited
     feedback from readers about how they'd like to see the  version  list
     presented, as it was growing rather large and unwieldy for publication
     in its entirety. Danny Mingle @ 1:116/9  had  a  suggestion on how to
     shrink the nodelist, a problem that is  no  longer  with  us.  WAy
     back  then  the nodelist  was growing quite rapidly as more folks
     discovered the new world of computer communications and  the  internet
     wasn't  yet  ubiquitous. COmplaints about nodelist bloat and proposed
     solutions would be a regular topic in FIdonews yet for another few
     years.

     15  years ago in fidonews ... VOlume 13, issue 33, 12 August 1996

     CHristopher Baker is settling  in  as  editor,  having  been appointed
     to  the position  upon  the disappearance of the previous editor who
     did not name a replacement.

     Highlights of Chris's editorial section from this issue were: "Zone 3
     has a new Zone Coordinator in David Nugent but we still do not have an
     updated Zone 3 section in our Nodelist in Zone 1. Does Zone 3 show
     updated in Zones 2? 4? 5? 6?"

     NOTE: FIDONEWS Echo is now moving over the Planet Connect part of the
     Zone 1 Backbone. Everyone should be able to get a link to that Echo as
     soon as you read this."

     FIdonet via ftp was just starting to be  used  regularly  in those
     days, which  meant  three different ways to get your mail, regular
     modem over telephone line,  the  PLanet connect satellite  service,
     and ftp over the internet.

     Also in this issue, Damian Walker of 2:2502/666 continued his
     multipart series on creating netwide bulletins using various tools
     such as netmgr and fdint. SEe fidonews 1330 for the first part.  NEw
     fidonet sysops, expand the reach of your bbs. Read his articles, and
     implement some of the suggestions.

     jim barchuk of 1:141/355 tells about FIdonews  now  in  html format
     via  his site, as well as his fidonews archives via http or ftp.

     10 years ago in FIdonews ... Volume 18,  Number  33  13  Aug 2001

     Frank  Vest  the  editor talks about using his FIdonet point over a
     lan to do his echomail.  Janis  pens  an  article  on coming  changes
     in the filebone which will soon be supplanted by the INternational
     Filegate project.
     There were  also  the usual  humor selections, as well as a recipe,
     and an article describing  the  production  process  for  FIdonews by
     the editor.
