Ärende: Re: FidoNews Vol. 28 No. 40 Sustainability IV
=====================================================
Hi, Michiel van der Vlist! How are you?
on Sunday, 09 of October, I read your messsage to alexander koryagin
about "FidoNews Vol. 28 No. 40 Sustainability IV"

ak>> 1. Programs for reading Fidonet a way much convenient than scanty
ak>> means of web forums. Everything I see in web forums is "page1,
ak>> page2,... last page" You CANNOT properly sort it out, to filter
ak>> received messages in a lot of ways, to store the messages in a
ak>> convenient form where you can make a quick search.

Mvd> Frankly, I never use all that. I don't keep archives, messages are
Mvd> automatically deleted after some time. Most web forums have a search
Mvd> option where one can search on keywords. It seems to be good enough
 Mvd> for the vast majority.

First, you were right if we could see Fidonet style discussions in web
forums now. But there are no of them, and it is very indicative! A long
discussion looks miseable when it's going on in a web forum. Maximum what
people can do is a short quote from a previos letter. This mechanism itself
prevents a long and clear discussion.
Second, if people don't have long Fidonet style discussions, they,
accordingly, don't need means for that kind conversations. All conversation
on forum either mocking phrases or short question like messages. But there
was time when some Fidonet discussions touched very serious acpects of life,
Universe; many of those discussions are still intersting to read. A whole
fidonet discussion can be in the form of one text file, easy to read and
store. You filter the letters of the discussion by youself, but when you
seach in web forums you sink in the seach result, and it gives you nothing.

ak>> 2. If a Fidonet user wants to show a picture he can do it in the
ak>> way existed in web forums - just to write the picture's URL.

Mvd> For that one must either run one's own web server or go through the
Mvd> motions of uploading the picture to a public picture gallery like
 Mvd> Flickr or Picasa.

It's easy.

Mvd> Web forums usually allow inserting a picture with a few mouse clicks.
Mvd> And even more important, the reader does not have to do anyting at
Mvd> all, other than scrolling down to see it.

Imho it is a very good idea to hide pictures behind URLs. The world now has
made the process of making photos so easy that most photos now have a
practically zero value. And it would be better not see 99.9% of them.

ak>> 3. At last, as I've already put, it is the fact that messages are not
ak>> stored in place moderated by one man. If a message is sent and is
ak>> going through fidonet nobody can stop it. There is no central storage
ak>> for the messages. For the people who love freedom it is important.

Mvd> A web master can only censor his own forum. No way that he can censor
 Mvd> the entire web.

It is a very bad thing that a web forum master can do such a thing.

Mvd> In FidoNet OTOH, we have manouvred ourselves in a situation where a
Mvd> Troika - that is just THREE PEOPLE - can hold the whole so called
Mvd> international echomail at ransom. :-(

I don't know the problem well. But imho:
1. The more nodes the better.
2. Groups of nodes have a center station. If a bad man has captured that
central station, the node sysops can organize another center and get
messages from it.

ak>> The main problem of Fidonet is that young people feel that they need
ak>> nothing but computer games. There is no afflux of new young blood.

Mvd> HAM radio suffers from the same problem. There are so many other
Mvd> interesting things to do for young people these days.

Playing.

Mvd> Moaning about it is not going to change it.

It was just an explanation.

ak>> These people just don't have desire to participate in deep and long
 ak>> discussions.

Mvd> They found other means of communicating then by "writing articles".
 Mvd> Steve Jobs understood that.

And helped them in creating an ocean of short foolish brainless twits and
others of that ilk.

Bye Michiel!
