Ärende: Local Non-Fidonet Echo

Hello Everybody,

This is strange.  A non-FidoNet local echo called "fidonews, run and
maintained by Janis Kracht, originating from her BBS in New York, seems
to have replaced the authentic FidoNet echo known as "Fidonews" that is
run and maintained by the entire FidoNet community.  At least in Zone 1.

Although it is true that Janis Kracht does have some support, namely
two people (Ross Cassell and Bob Seaborn), it is also true that none
of those three people are members of the FidoNet community, having
been automatically excommunicated as a result of their actions.

Most sysops in Zone 1 are unaware of what has happened, as the troika
named above did what they did without their knowledge or consent.

Björn Felten, the sole officially recognized editor/moderator of the
FidoNet community's Fidonews newsletter/echo, has publicly stated his
own disapproval of what has been done.  So have many others, including
several sysops in Zone 1.  Every member of the FidoNet community should
also feel free to show their disapproval and disgust at what has been
done to this echo, newsletter, and to FidoNet in general.

However, it must also be realized that sysops and participants in
Zone 1 would likely be persecuted by the "troika" if they were to
express their dismay.  As such, sysops and participants in Zone 1
should be forgiven if they choose to remain silent.  After all,
not many are so brave as the handful who have spoken out in the
FN_SYSOP echo.  They are the real patriots of FidoNet.

I have stated in previous messages that any participant is free
to start his/her own echo/newsletter, and are also free to call
it whatever they want, including "fidonews" if that is their wish.
I even made a joke of it, by writing a parody of the official
FidoNews newsletter.  Of course, that was a one-time thing, done
in jest.  I am sure the editor and others recognized it as such.

What the troika has done is not a parody.  They have copied the
official Fidonews newsletter, claiming it as their own, and have
sought to replace the official newsletter and echo with their
own local version.  Without the knowledge and consent of other
sysops or participants.  The least they could have done is to
be original, coming up with a new format and a new name.

In the FN_SYSOP echo, the members of the troika have taken
immaturity to a totally new level.  A level never seen before
in the entire history of mankind.  But I cannot comment there,
as I am not currently a sysop, and hated among the troika.  :)
