     Neat Things You Can Do With Linux 5
     By Janis Kracht 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net

     Last time we played around with permissions and files and ran a few
     binary scripts since linux makes running helpful programs so easy.
     There are tons of books out there with millions of helpful scripts so
     I won't try to replicate those works <grin>.. but I have a few I've
     found that get used a lot here. YMMV.

     Some helpful bash scripts

     This document contains:
      1. Making .ZIC files (archive+tic=zic): makezic.sh
      2. Moving *.bad to *.tic: mvbad2tic.sh
      3. Moving dirctory contents to /inbound: mvfile2in.sh
      4. Getting file descriptions from FILE_ID.DIZ files: getdesc.sh
      5. Automating some html pickups, etc.

     ======================================================

     I doubt any of these scripts have any incredibly unique or original
     ideas in them, but if you are new to Linux, and trying to get your
     bbs going, the following might be of some help.

     ======================================================
     1. Making .ZIC files (tic+archive =zic): makezic.sh
     ======================================================
     Allfix and Filemanager can store an archive and it's respective
     filename.tic in a file named filename.zic.

     BBBS's filemanager doesn't have this feature, so I wrote a script to
     take care of it for one of my Binkd downlinks. I run this script in
     a cron job. I thought someone else might find it helpfull.
     helpful.. darn, you know what I mean <g>

     ============makezic.sh==============================
     #!/bin/sh
     cd /home/bbbs/binkd/work
     rm archives
     rm ticlist
     # write out list of archives
     dir -1 -I*.tic -I*.sh -Iticlist -Iarchives >> archives
     # Build a list of any file in this directory except for
     # ones named *.sh,
     # ticlist and archives. Just speeds things up a tad.
     dir -1 *.tic >> /home/bbbs/binkd/work/ticlist
     for file in `cat archives`
     do
      for tics in `cat ticlist`
       do
        if
         test=`grep $file $tics`
     then
      f=`basename $tics .tic`
     # the above line stores the tic "filename" in
     # variable f without the .tic extension. If I
     # put some chars following the last ` then the
     #    variable f would contain the filename.chars.
     # i.e., this is often used to rename
     #    *.bad to *.tic.
        zip -jm0 $f.zic $file $tics
      fi
      done
     done
     mv *.zic /home/bbbs/binkd/userbox
     # 'userbox' is just the binkd 'box' for this user
     chown bbs.bbs /home/bbbs/binkd/userbox/*
     chmod 775 /home/bbbs/binkd/userbox/*

     =============end of script===========

     ======================================================
     2. Moving *.bad to *.tic: mvbad2tic.sh
     ======================================================
     This is a short one :) but works great..

     ============mvbad2tic.sh=============
     #!/bin/sh
     list="`ls -1 *.bad`"

         for file in $list
         do
             f=`basename $file .bad`.tic
             mv $file $f
         done
     =====================================

     If I remember correctly, Russ Johnson modified
     this to also change bad packets, etc

     ======================================================
     3. Moving dirctory contents to /inbound: mvfile2in.sh
     ======================================================

     There are probably quite a number of ways to accomplish this.. but
     this seemed easiest to to me..

     I have a number of people who log on to my system to ftp their
     traffic in and out of here. I don't want to move their inbound files
     to my tossing directory (/home/bbbs/inbound) until they are done
     uploading so I need to check to see if they are done or not... Also,
     some people start uploading but have to stop, and want to return
     later to finish the upload, so they leave a .bsy flag in their /in
     directory, so I check for that as well.

     First I make list of user names in a text file (dirlist) which
     corresponds to each one's user directory, and then one by one I pick
     the name off the top of list for processing.

     =========file dirlist=====
     jkracht
     rkracht
     mkracht
     ========end file dirlist==

     ====mvfile2in.sh======================
     #!/bin/sh
     cd /home/bbbs
     for dir in `cat /home/bbbs/dirlist`
      do
     if ps aux | grep ^$dir
        then
        echo "---user $dir online---"
     elif test -e /home/$dir/*/*.bsy
     then
          echo "$dir bsy-flag exists"
     else
      echo "safe to move files from $dir"
      mv /home/$dir/in/* /home/bbbs/inbound
     fi
     done
     ====end mvfile2in.sh==================

     ======================================================
     4. Getting file descriptions from FILE_ID.DIZ files:
     getdesc.sh
     ======================================================

     This script extracts the diz and then imports it to a file list
     (descript.txt). tr is used to put all of the diz description on one
     line following the filename. I think Pertti Heikkinen posted this
     first in the bbbs.english echo.

     ============getdesc.sh=======================
     #!/bin/sh
     dir -1 *.zip > dirlist
     for f in `cat dirlist`
     do
       unzip -pC $f file_id.diz >> FILE_ID.DIZ
       if [ -f FILE_ID.DIZ ] ; then
          tr '\n\r' ' ' <FILE_ID.DIZ >tmp.ff
          echo $f `cat tmp.ff` >> descript.txt
          rm -f FILE_ID.DIZ tmp.ff
       fi
     done
     ========end getdesc.txt======================

     5. Automating some html pickups, etc. This is a script I wrote to
     pick up files like NASA's picture of the day.

     #!/bin/sh
     # (Set up Date variable, get url, find picname, get pic,
     # conv.html2txt, cleanup txt, archive files, comment, hatch.)
     cd /home/bbbs/nasa/work
     # Set variable YMD to today's date in format yymmdd (numbers)
     YMD=`date +%y%m%e`
     wget ap$YMD.htm 128.183.17.121/apod/ap$YMD.html
     #
     # dump html to text using lynx
     lynx ap$YMD.html -dump > ap$YMD.txt
     #
     newpic=`grep "jpg]" ap$YMD.txt`
     echo $newpic > newpic.txt
     # If I was a wiz I could prob. do this in one line <g>
     # Strip extra chars to get filename:
     cat newpic.txt | sed 's/2\]\[//g' > newpic2
     cat newpic2 | sed 's/^\[//g' > newpic3
     cat newpic3 | sed 's/\]//g' > newpic4
     getpic=`grep jpg newpic4`
     wget http://128.183.17.121/apod/image/0008/$getpic
     mv $getpic ap$YMD.jpg
     #  cleanup text file
     cat ap$YMD.txt | sed 's/\[[0-9][0-9]\]/ /g' > new.txt
     cat new.txt | sed 's/\[[0-9]\]/ /g' > new2.txt
     cat new2.txt | sed '/^References$/,/^41$/d' > ap$YMD.txt
     #
     mv ap$YMD.txt ap$YMD.htm
     zip -jkl ap$YMD.zip file_id.diz
     zip -jml ap$YMD.zip ap$YMD.htm
     zip -jml ap$YMD.zip ap$YMD.txt
     zip -jm ap$YMD.zip ap$YMD.jpg
     zip -z ap$YMD.zip < /home/bbbs/filegate.hdr
     mv ap$YMD.zip /home/ftp/pub/nasa
     chmod 775 /home/ftp/pub/nasa/*.zip
     echo "ap$YMD.zip NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (plus published Repor
     #  cd /home/bbbs
     # ./bbbs bfileidx
     # ./bbbs bhatch /var/home/ftp/pub/nasa/ap$YMD.zip NASA

     Next time.. some quick key helps for Linux and maybe windows as well.
