     Sustaining FidoNews

     Well Richard has decided that he will wait until the future
     of Fidonews is resolved until continuing his Sustainability
     series here...  that's a shame, but I suppose I understand.

     It's hard to know what's up these days given the on again/
     off again negotiations between the zones and editors of
     Fidonews.  Let it be said though that even though joe sysop
     isn't aware of the background proceedings, things are
     moving along to a fair and good resolution, I believe.

     Trust me, when I tell you that we've been working on it for
     several days/weeks with give and take on both sides of the
     fence.

     It is quite fitting with the idea of Richard's
     sustainability series as well..  here we have the
     life-blood of Fidonet in the balance, Fidonews, and at
     least for a while, it seemed no "safe" way to put the
     anti-USA comments and anti-Zone1 comments to rest without
     finding someone to edit Fidonews who will be ultimately
     fair in publishing the news, and ultimately decisive in
     moderating the echo to remove those troublemakers's
     comments who would continue the age old insults that got us
     into this mess.

     But what's necessary here anyway in terms of moderation you
     may wonder?  Well, in this day and age of the Internet,
     it's not as easy as it may have been in "the good old
     days"..

     In the old days, feed cuts were issued to an offending
     system and essentially that cut only affected say that
     system or perhaps, sadly a group of systems..  Now though,
     with the introduction of the Internet, where anyone can
     link to anyone else, a moderator knows that cutting a feed
     means that the person who's access you deny can probably
     just get a feed from his buddy ...  No one seems to worry
     about such things are "dupe loops" (though perhaps they
     should -  How often do you see in the echos, "where DID
     that missing message that was quoted here go??), and no one
     seems to care about, oh yeah, Moderator rules <grin>..

     So if cutting access isn't the answer, how does a moderator
     keep the peace?  At the very least how to keep the Fidonews
     echo from returning to the sad offtopic pile of messages it
     had become in recent years :( Well there are some ways he
     can take care of that, for sure.

     We need moderators who can think outside the box..
     literally..  We need moderators in echos like Fidonews who,
     when they see the beginnings of garbage starting off in
     someone's posts, can quickly deflect that post right from
     the start..  Tell the poster and anyone who replies that
     thanks, but no thanks your comments are not necessary
     because "I can take care of it, after all".  It doesn't take
     all that much to change the direction of the discourse..
     and that's what's important here I think.
