Unions and membership in same always equates to politics.

I have a problem with believing that. I can cite numerous places that I've
worked, union and non-union that I'd call the same working conditions and
benefits. Except that there were far more inept people working in the
union shops than in the non-union shops were skill kept your job safe
from the layoff lines, while union shops layed people off according to
sceniority. In fact, I displaced several less skilled machinists than
myself at one non-union shop.

To secure you union status, they tell you to vote for a candidate who is
also liberally minded.

Retired, although I still have the skills. I also have a small shop that
I'm building an addon to my garage to move it into.

The company where I served my apprenticeship was not a unionized shop.

My U.S. Department of Labor, Division of Apprenticeships and Training
certificate was given to me upon graduation from a Federal Goverment
supported Apprenticeship. It is signed by the Secretary of Labor; W.
Willard Wirtz and Hugh Murphy, Administrator of Apprenticeships.

You see, there is a big difference in 'essential' workforce skills and
those of an ironworker. i.e. during WW2, T&D Makers were exempt from
the draft and never had to serve in the military as long as they
worked in the essential jobs of industry that supported the war effort.

That same mentality remains to this day.

OTH, a non-essential job like steel workers and/or iron workers would be
drafted immediately, due to their skills in construction...most of them
went into the Army Corps of Engineers at the outset of the war. While T&D
Makers were home making money hand over fist and enjoying the now free
women at the same time, they were also buying up property that was going
cheap at the time.

PS - I didn't know about this until I had graduated and gone on to work in
an essential job beginning with Boeing. Some of my elder T&D bretheren
schooled me on it from their own experiences.

It and your length of experience looks good on any resume' if you're
looking for a job as a Tool & Die maker. (resume' - note the ' is
included) It also works to an advantage if you're looking for a management
job which requires at least an AA in manufacturing.

No they're not...unions are unions with the same mindset and ideas.

I wouldn't give a contract for such a structure to a non-certified welder,
period. There are certified welders who are not members of a union.
