I have to grin (crookedly) when I read about gas prices in the USA and how high
they are... $3.18 a gallon would amount to $0.84 or EUR 0.67 per liter pump
price. I bought gas for my Mazda 323 station wagen on Monday and paid EUR 1.47
per liter for it. That was a low price, the lowest in town or even in the area.
And for a full tank (mine was almost empty), I paid something over EUR 50 or
$62.50. Not bad, eh? ;-(

Most of the difference is tax, of course. If an American government would try
to tax gas the way it's taxed here, I figure there'd be an armed revolution.

One of the differences is, of course, the long driving distances in the USA.
They eat up gas much faster than the relatively short distances we drive in
Germany - that's why the high gas prices aren't quite as unpopular here as they
would be in the States (although athere are a few, like me, who hate to pay
high gas taxes that are then put into the general budget rather than used to
construct and repair roads). The long driving distances in the States make even
a small price increase at the pump into a major financial problem.

In the end, it's not really the oil prices driving the gas price - at least
that's not the major factor - it's governments that see a juicy opportunity to
rake in extra money without causing too much public outrage in their direction
- everyone instead damns the oil multis, which admittedly earn well, but are
not the ones making the most money out of gasoline. And I assume that's true in
the States as well as in Germany, although the taxes on gas are lower.
