Indeed, this is part of training, and everybody knows that
gung ho can kill off the best training.  Good cops i know
will tell younever to go into any dicey situation,
especially a domestic dispute without your backup person.

This is especially true in places wehre the cops don't see a lot of this in
their day to day.  Then again, even if they
do there's mister gung ho who leaves his/her brain behind,
and breaks training.
Some leos are better trained than others, and training is a
constant.

IN working in professions I have, and in my volunteer life I live by the adage
that "what you do in training you'll do in combat."  Whether it be getting the
stage set erected for
the show tonight, or providing emergency comms, those are
the equivalent, and training is supposed to make the unusual situation easier
to handle by giving you the instinctive
reactions that will minimize problems, and even save your
life.  One of those, often unheeded, is to never go into a
sticky situation without your backup.

I quit watching all those guy gal team cop shows back in the '80's because it
was always the gal the broke training and
went into the stupid situation without her backup, after her partner had just
told her "now you wait until we get there,
you just observe and report ... " and MR. testosterone
always has to pull her fat out of the fire.  I grew tired of the reinforcement
of the stereotype by the writers and
producers real fast.
Back before Katrina I was attending one of the emergency
management meetings at the hospital which happened one
Friday a month.  One of the boss dogs for security for the
state university hospital system was showing off their new
walkie talkie units, so light, didn't weigh down your belt,
yada yada.  hE picks the thing up to pass it around, by its
little rubber duckie antenna.

Now remember that these guys handle the medical needs of
such places as Angola prison, etc.  Also, we're inner city
New Orleans.  After the meeting I drew MR. security boss
into my radio room there at the hospital and demonstrated to him the little
flimsy sma connector which mated rubber
duckie antenna to radio, and took the clothes off one of my
vhf/uhf units to show him what mated that sma connector to
the circuit board.  Then I explained that his, and any of
his folks should consider that radio their ultimate final
backup plan, that's your yell help.  In other words "don't
do that!"  I explained quite strongly that its antenna was
not a handle, and he should tell all of his people to pick
up the radio by the case of the radio, not its antenna.

I encouraged him to do some more serious training with his
officers, especially on care and feeding of these new
expensive digital trunked radios.  AS I told him, "It just
might save somebody's life."
