Quite well. When I was a lad of 16, I owned a Detroit creation known as a
1940 Ford Standard sedan. It had a low compression V8 with a 6 volt
battery to run the entire electrical system, gasoline heater and all.

It was always parked in the Cul-de-Sac at the end of our street facing
into the north winds. No protection from wind with only alcohol in the
radiator to protect the water from freezing. It started every morning for
me and there was only one day I had to walk to school because mine was the
only car out of the family's total of 5, that would start at -36F...my dad
kept a jeep in the garage, facing out with a snow plow on it to clear the
street as the city wouldn't get around to that until late in the day. He
also had a 46 Chevrolet, grandpa had 49 Pontiac and mom drove a 48
Pontiac. They all started eventually, but not before it warmed up to
-10F...

That Lada Niva doesn't have the disadvantage of having a 6 volt system to
get it going. Since the 12 volt system has been introduced to US autos,
they don't have a problem either, unless the owners neglect to keep
winterize their vehicles.

I've never had a Chevrolet that wouldn't start in sub-zero weather.

My dad did, but it was a mechanic's car and if you're not familiar with
how well a mechanic's car is maintained, they don't work on them until
they stop running. I've also heard  him tell storys about building a fire
under the oil pan of his 1927 Erskin so that he could get the oil thin
enough to hand crank the engine. They didn't have multi-weight oil in
those days.
