I guess that's what I was thinking.  Still, cats are solitary creatures not
necessarily in need of our companionship or affection --- just our laps.

It would be akin to having a pet wolf.  As far as I know, no one has ever
succeeded in doing that.

And always someplace high up.  One time I found Sammy atop the water heater.

Our cat has never been outdside and has no desire to cross that threshold.
