When I retired and we moved here, I never gave it much thought that there
wouldn't be a machine shop in town. Most of my projects need some
machining. One day, I was at a muffler shop and inquired of the owner if
there was someone in town with a lathe to make a part for the steering
column of my 1956 Chevy project. It just so happened that 'Harry' was
there and my friend suggested that I ask Harry, since he knew that he had
a lathe in his automotive shop. Ahhh, I thought, a fellow machinist. He
wasn't, but invited me to his shop and he'd let me use the lathe. Before I
could use it, I had to rebuild the transfer case and replace some gears,
otherwise there was no carriage feed. That done, I went about machining my
project, all of which impressed Harry enough that I was called upon to do
some machining for him. Useful, grumpy old man that I was.

And if you have a chronic illness, that makes things even worse.

The nice thing about retirement is that you have all the time that you
have left to live, for the rest of your life. The bad thing is that you're
too damned old to do anything you could have done when you were 40, or
even 50.
