RW>>>> A friend of mine found a 25yo Buick that he wanted to buy. When he
RW>>>> asked me to inspect it for him, I found brake lines that were
RW>>>> rusted thru and leaking fluid on everything...

RB>>> Nice story, but what does that have to do with stainless steel
RB>>> brake lines? All it does is prove my point about corrosion of iron
 RB>>> lines.

RW>> LOL! You're fucking hilarious. There haven't been 'iron' brake lines
RW>> put on any cars in decades. Not since the advent of stainless steel
 RW>> tubing.

RB> So how do you figure stainless steel lines "rusting through"?
RB> Stainless can undergo point corrosion in the presence of chlorides,
 RB> but it doesn't "rust".

In the process of manufacturing, if the stainless comes into contact with
an iron fixture or tooling, it will be contaminated with iron. Tubing is
made from flat sheet, heated to soften it and then formed via iron tooling
that forms it. It also has a welded seam its entire length.

If the tubing is then stocked without a passivation process being
performed on it, it will rust under the conditions it is exposed to in
vehicles. Passivation is the process of cleaning the metal with an oxidant
such as nitric or citric acid. Also note that stainless steel is
classified as 'corrosian resistant' and not corrosion proof.

RB> I would have thought my comments would give you pause for thought
RB> rather than lead to braying, mindless laughter.

Your comments are those of an idiot who has no idea what stainless steel
really is.

RB>>> I might also mention that I was commenting on the present situation
RB>>> when I mentioned stainless brake lines, not on the situation of
 RB>>> cars made decades ago.

RW>> LOL! So much for your automotive expertise...even stainless lines
RW>> will corrode under certain conditions. You say stainless doesn't
 RW>> corrode? Bullshit.

RB> Indeed, see the comments above and in other messages where I noted
 RB> the circumstances.

 RB> [992 Mazda]

RB>>> Luckily, there was no problem except for the clogged radiator,
RB>>> which I was forced to replace. That was some 5-6 years ago, and
RB>>> there have been no aftereffects.

RW>> What kind of coolant did you put in it and how much water was added
 RW>> to it?

RB> The coolant was a standard glycol based material with the usual
 RB> corrosion inhibitor,

Even 6 years ago, they made factory mixed coolant that didn't need any
water mixed with it. If your 'shop' didn't use a factory 50/50 mix (that's
1/2 glycol and 1/2 deionized water), your chances of your car doing the
same are increased.

RB> but as I didn't put it in myself (I have this
RB> done in the garage nowadays, meanwhile being too old for active work
RB> on cars) I don't know the exact proportions of coolant and water - in
RB> any case, this all happened some 5-6 years ago, so it'd be hard to
 RB> trace things back.

And the coolant hasn't been changed since?

RB> My big mistake was forgetting the corrosion inhibitor degrades with
RB> time even when the car is not driven, and not knowing that the
RB> radiator channels in this car are much narrower than in other
 RB> (earlier) cars.

Even 1992 radiators have wide channels. Earlier cars used small tubes,
some rectangular, some round. Today, they're thin but wide...
