==================
Hi Ross,

RC>WD> But they had. Even something as small as Belgium had its own
RC>WD> backbone with distribution, a dire necessity even in the days of V22.

RC> Uh huh, and the regions over here had their own echoes, we even had a
RC> handful of South Carolina echoes...

Indeed, you don't get it.

In the modem-days, certainly the V22 days, the international calling costs were
horrendous. Probably there were long-distance costs also in North-America, but
they didn't compare to anythng we had to endure.

The only way to survive was to designate one single system that concentrated
all the mail and whose calling costs would be taken care of one way or the
other. As I was involved in the money-earning process to fund that R29-backbone
(we ran a project for schools based on Fido know-how) I can tell you that the
montly bill was in excess of BFR40.000. In the current situation that
translates to $1,100-1,200 monthly calling costs ... just to dial the
Netherlands like 20 miles away.

Using such a backbone as a weapon never even was a thought ... well, not with
the people who operated it.

RC> Just as you were plagued by Clay Tannacore, I remember Christopher Baker
RC> being plagued by Floyd Drennon and Stan Bimson (among others).

My oh my ... some people are really good at dragging old cows onto the scene.

Clay never plagued me anymore than you or anyone else does. I have the "->" key
which I use on a daily basis to skip over the majority that posters write.
Although the volume is not anymore what it used to be, I still don't have the
time to cope with it. Simple.

Last time Clay and I interacted, I think Feb.1998 or so, he certainly wasn't
plagueing me, our private interactions were quite friendly even.

RC>WD> In Bob's list they still feature ... there is a plethora of RU. and
RC>WD> ESP. echoes (and others) where nothing happens. Basically it's a big
RC>WD> list of inactive or dead things.

RC> LOL... I still have a handful of the R20 ones, sitting in my cfgs doing
RC> nuttin..

Of course, and plenty other dead stuff too. The question rather is why would
you like to maintain a list of 1,000 (?) nodes when only 25-40 are really
active...

RC>WD> As always, the concept of "international" is something completely
RC>WD> alien to many Americans. Anything in R28 for example is by virtue of
RC>WD> that region always 'international' as it covers at least 2
RC> countries.

RC> I think you are smart enough to catch my meaning, as to mean across
RC> zones...

We have dutch-language stuff that is distributed in 3 zones without the help of
the NAB. Does that qualify as "across zones" ?

RC> Nothing to cling to, you all still cling to echoes that only apply to and
RC> interest you all over there, just as we do over here.. I mention
RC> political echoes, perfect example as our politics are way different than
RC> yours..

Some guy here areafixed "*" a while ago and it wasn't caught by the system
hence got forwarded to my uplink. As a result I got linked to the complete NAB
... and then I started realising how insignificant it has become. Hundreds and
hundreds of echomail conferences most likely not connected to anyone or no-one
having contributed for years.

I see stuff here on the NAB dry since 2008 ... if that makes you feel good then
that's fine with me.

Take care,

 \%/@rd
