without a means to access the internet.

Hell, even Ruth Argust and friend Jerry had POTS access to the internet
over 12 years ago and they lived 2 or 3 miles off of the beaten path in
the middle of a California dry lake bed. Telephone service to their house
was provided by an AT&T repeater on a telephone pole by the road (2 miles
away)...

Personally, I haven't been without access to the internet unless I was on
a Bus, Train or traveling in my car. Even then, I had ready access to
communication via Bus terminal phones, AMTRAK telephone service and in the
last 15 years, via cellphone wherever I traveled.

In 2008 while hold up in a hotel in Freeport, IL we had access to WIFI
internet provided by the hotel. I got my Fidonet mail from my system as a
point via that WIFI access.

While deer hunting in the remote area of Colorado on national forrest land
in the Rocky Mountains, there was cell phone service, 3g and now 4g. If we
thought we'd have time to squander on the internet, we could have
subscribed to internet by satellite. Instead, we drove 20 miles to Durango
and used a local restaurant's wifi to access the internet.

That you have relatives in this country that are out of touch with reality
and the conveniences of this modern age is noted. Like they say in LA:

'some got it, some don't.'
