Ärende: Dial up
================

I did a bit of that too. Even AT&T still offers dial up internet service.

RW>> Dial Up is offered to those who're still living in the wilderness,

MvdV> There is no mor "wilderness"in this country. For the very few
MvdV> places where DSL and cable are not available, there is mobile
 MvdV> broadband.

The wilderness in the USA was set aside years ago as National Parks and
Recreation areas. They are by modern day standards as remote as one wishes
to be. And yet, there is wifi service at some park headquarters, ranger
stations and/or camp grounds.

RW>> And then there are the three or four satellite services who offer
RW>> VOIP and the internet to those who live in in-accessible places like
RW>> New Mexico, Las Vegas and Cincinnati...

MvdV> Satellite is offered here as well, but that is relatively expensive

America's initial sat service for those on the farm or in the wilderness,
was with HughesNet, which was initially very expensive. Now days, DirecTV
and DishNet offer sat internet service for a base price less than $20 if
you're a sat TV customer...easily affordable even for a limited income
retiree. But, retiree's don't live in such remote places because they need
access to medical facilities, thus they tend to live in close proximity to
those facilities.

RW>>>> Of course, this means less and less BBS calls via POTS (telnet
 RW>>>> still works),

MvdV> Plus of course that POTS itself is on the way out. Few Telcos still
MvdV> offer true classic analog telephony. What they offer an emulation
MvdV> based on VOIP technology. Perfect for voice, but unsuitable for the
 MvdV> classic modem.

I and others have found that the Magic-Jack module will accommodate modem
communications. Best part is that MJ only costs $19.95/year.

MvdV>>> BBS's have gone the way of the dinosaur over a decade ago.

RW>> Which was first to make that exit, the dinosaur or Dodo bird?

MvdV> The dino of course. By 6 orders of magnitude.

Hmmmm. There are still some dinos running around on this planet.

RW>>>> which to the younger generation is a huge waste of time, to
RW>>>> say the least. Especially when they can fire up (or leave in the
RW>>>> tray) an internet browser and be browsing online in seconds...

 MvdV>>> Xactly....

8^)

RW>> 8^) We've got to quit agreeing so much or Bashe will think there's a
 RW>> conspiracy afoot...

MvdV> There is, but nobody noticed. ... Yet. ;-)

Ross has. 8^)
