Ärende: TZUTC Kludge
====================
Hi ROy,

MvdV> Fidonet. It would help if your messages displayed a "TZUTZ 0000"
 MvdV> kludge.

Roy> Good advice. See kludges in this message...

Started using that a few days ago, messages through the
usenet gate I use had some people complaining about
time/date confusion. Guess they needed something to bitch
and moan about.
This computer clock is also set to utc. That's for a
variety of reasons, partially waht I do with ham radio. I
haven't set computer clocks to anything but utc voer almost
2 decades.

MvdV> I have this in my golded.cfg: UseTZUTC yes

Right, can see where it would be. I just ask a friend with
a dx map, or if I should need it, consult the nodelist to
see when zmh is for that zone.

Still it ensures than when I post a vessel to shiptrak the
time stamp is consistent with others who use the web
interface instead of the email interface which I use.

MvdV> To convert your own local time to UTC and vice versa... yes that's
MvdV> easy because you know your own time zone. But how does it help you
MvdV> to know what e.g. my time zone is?

RW> I know that your country is in the 0100 time zone. See above.

MvdV>>> With the coming of the internet and being constantly on-line
 MvdV>>> that became impractical.

RW>> The kludge or setting the clock at UTC?

MvdV> The latter. When my computers were stand alone running DOS or some
MvdV> olde OS, and were only used by myself and and only made contact
MvdV> with other system by modem, it was no problem, it was even
MvdV> convenient. But now that it is running windows and internet access
MvdV> is part of the OS, setting the machine's time to UTC has unwanted
MvdV> side effects. The time stamp in my e-mails is confusing for most
MvdV> recipients. My web site is confusing for the locals if it does not
MvdV> run local time. Etc, etc...

RW> I see. None of my email recipients have complained about the time
RW> stamp in my emails. They probably don't pay any attention to that
RW> info anyway. As for local users, all they need to know is the local
RW> time on their own computers. I don't see much of a conflict there.

I've had email recipients over the years complain about
funny timestamps. i explain it to 'em and then tell them I
have no intention of setting the pc clock to local time.
UTC works.

NOw if TImEd would just use the tzutc kludge without me
having to do it manually. tz is set for my tic processor
and maximus so tz environment variable is used here, but I
just have a little text file that I can use to paste it into outgoing messages
from here. Ads an extra step, but only
takes a second or two.

Regards,
           Richard
