Um yeah, and like most things, if the system, or the
"marketplace of ideas" isn't totally manipulated, eventually it will self
correct.  McCarthyism eventually fell out of
favor when people started picking up on how bogus it really
was, at least for awhile, then we got Reagan.

Uh huh.  Where we believe that, misguided wrongheaded or
anything else you wish to call such folks, we'd rather have
them parading their beliefs in the open.  LEt that there
"marketplace of ideas" discredit them.

THe trouble is, when folks deny folks with points of view a
hearing in public by controlling all the channels to reach
them, then only "acceptable" ideas to those in control can
be heard.  The danger of that happening never goes away,
hence that old saw "the price of freedom is eternal
vigilance."

There was an active group of folks with kkk and nazi party
leanings used to meet every night of the year on 3950 khz.
if I got bored spinning the dial on the ham rig elsewhere i
used to tune in and listen to those guys, and on occasion
even engage in debate with a couple of them.  There were a
couple of those guys that would debate those who had
different viewpoints in a civil manner.  If they were there
I'd engage them, otehrwise, when the rabid weirdos were all
that was there I'd usually tune out.

Some believe the Mormons were run out of Nauvoo Illinois for their religious
practices, iow persecution.  Quite the
contrary, I grew up near there, and have ancestors on my
dad's mother's side of the family who lived in the area
then.  THe Mormons were run out of Nauvoo because of their
predatory business practices toward those who were not
followers of their religion but were their neighbors.  Had
they engaged in fair business practices they would have been welcome to stay. 
In fact, many were not pushed out, but the church's leadership was because they
encouraged those
practices.
