JK> >That's what happens when your navigator can only navigate as far as the
JK> > bottom of a Whisky-bottle.

JK> See my reply to Roy.. interesting artifacts have been found on the atoll
JK> where Earhart is thought to have landed..

Actually, nothing is known at all, except that Earhart did not reach Howland.

A finger phalanx bone was found but DNA-research is inconclusive, it may even
be a turtle bone. Further some traces of rouge, a broken woman's cosmetic
mirror, trace of a campfire with bird and fishbones, clam shells and a few
heat-warped bottles probably used to boil water.

That is 'it'.

Had Earhart/Noonan really landed at Gardner they would've salvaged parts of the
plane but that seems not to be the case. Some aluminium parts have been found
on Gardner but they cannot be possitively linked to an airplane.

Do not forget, Earhart/Noonan disappeared in 1937. From 1938 through 1965 the
island was inhabited by British subjects, even a coconut plantation was tried.
During those 27 years nobody of the up to 100 people living there found a
trace. Gardner is 6km by 2km wide but most of that is an atol, there's only a
little bit of land and 100 people in 27 years would certainly have found
something.

THIGAR (The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery), I think I've
read about every sylable they ever published on this, have launched into 10
expeditions which yielded exactly what I described above.

One of the paths to investigate of course is that maybe existing artifacts have
been involuntary destroyed during those 27 years of settlement.

THIGAR's approach and conclusions are discarded by the international scientific
community as unreliable.

JK> "Noonan's techniques--a combination of celestial navigation and dead
JK> reckoning brought the Electra close to Howland Island.

The significant portion of that day's flight was performed in broad daylight.
There you go with "celestial navigation". To quote military researchers: the
flight was badly planned and even worse executed. For starters, Noonan was a
known severe alcoholic, his reasons for being asked to leave PanAm are still
unclear but I wouldn't be surprised if it were alcohol.

JK> The Itasca radio
JK> logs show that the aircraft was steadily approaching Howland. The men
JK> aboard the Itasca could hear Earhart loud and clear (S5). But Earhart and
JK> Noonan heard only one transmission from the Itasca on 7500 kHz. Earhart
JK> was unable to obtain a null on that frequency. The Itasca, for its part,
JK> could not obtain a null on Earhart's transmissions; although the crew
JK> could not have transmitted the bearing to the Electra because of the
JK> radio problems aboard the aircraft, getting a bearing on Earhart's
JK> transmissions could have aided the search for Earhart and Noonan. "

Oh dear God .... Earheart transmitted at 3105lHz, a frequency set aside to
aviation by the FCC then. The Itasca could listen, but had no means of
transmitting at that frequency. Finally they attempted Morse and that worked
but the direction finder of the Electra couldn't handle it.

That fact that the Ithasca heard Earhart at 3105kHZ is an indication she was
real close because Earhart's transmitter flying at 1,000ft only could reach
about 50 miles. As a reference Nikumaroro is 400 miles away, she never could've
been there.

The fact that she was so loud and clear on the radio, hence nearby, and the
fuel-starvation reports followed by silence are a clear indication the plane
must have crash-landed at sea and both occupants were either killed on impact
or drowned afterward. (or were picked-up by Martians and whisked-away for
sex-research)

Popular history would like it to be otherwise but the only place where remains
of the plane will be found is 18,000ft deep on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

The type of navigation that Noonan used was that he was pointing to an area
south of Howland sure to miss the island if they continued, but he could
exactly pinpoint when they were passing the longitudenal location of Howland.
Then turn north and simply stay on that course.

Something went wrong and to this day it is unknown "what". There were many
clouds that day which cast shadows on the water and Howland being only 2 miles
long and 20ft high could easily have been overlooked as a shadow.

I subscribe to the theory they were close but missed the target for one reason
or the other.

What you conclude that Earhart got into this over her head and suffered from
bad radio-operation/planning probably is also correct. The Ithasca could not
broadcast at an aviation frequency, which seems quite acceptable to me ... how
she never even considered that is a mistery to me.

Actually, I don't think there's much heroism involved. When noticing the number
of mishaps she was involved in, it is a small miracle she wasn't killed sooner.

But fascinating reading neverheless.

Nothing crossposted or crossreferenced, Janis. Straight from the head.
