===================================================
Hi Roy,

Roy>> I recall a TV station in the 50s that was either in Moline or Rock
Roy>> Island, but don't recall the channel or affiliation.. Channel 4, I
 Roy>> think.

 RW> YEp, whbf iirc.

Roy> That wasn't its call back then...

Doesn't surprise me.

RW>> Can relate to that. IF I need cb I'll just jump on the
 RW>> kenwood.

 Roy>> Modified for 11 mtrs?

RW> Opened up because of mars/shares etc. Also of course for
RW> 60m transmit. IF we gotta do it to work ch 9 we'll get 'r
RW> done and sweat the legalities later if it's an emergency.

Roy> Just wondering, as the TS520 has had a xtal change to cover 11m.
Roy> That was done when I was still a Novice back in the 70s. My 'elmer'
Roy> did it, since we were all 'HFers' back then.

YEah friend of mine did that to a 520 also. My Kenwood
ts-440 is opened up as is the 680. The Icom 740 ahs the
'warc' bands but wont' tx or rx outside the amateur bands.

RW> Besides, old 23 channel cb stuff is cheap, I just haven't
 RW> needed to acquire one.

Roy> You can buy a 40ch cheaper than an old 23...people keep those 23ch
Roy> radios around, especially if they're xtal controlled.

No doubt. Thing is, most of the time if I'm traveling in
caravan we've got ham radio between them.

Roy>> The 'truckers' use channel 19 as they pass through here. Sometimes
Roy>> fun to listen to them fight among themselves. The local hispanic
Roy>> community uses that channel for general communication and for some
Roy>> reason, yankee truckers cuss them out for doing so. They get put in
<snip>
RW> I used to do one cb with dual watch capability in our
RW> traveling show caravan, he'd listen to 19 or whatever the
RW> standard road channel for the region is. The other rode on
RW> a side channel somewhere for intercommunication among us.

Roy> 8^) we'd use VHF walkie-talkies for that. One of our gang was a
Roy> mountain top serviceman, so the equipment was always available.

Right, but cb was cheaper, and two of us had amplifiers.

Roy>> I can relate to it all since it resembles Fidonet a lot.

RW> YEah that it does. I use it to exchange relevant traffic
RW> and road conditions info or something like that, or to
RW> acquire it if necessary when traveling.

Roy> Back in the day, I had a Browning Golden Eagle base station and kept
Roy> a Courier 23ch radio in the car. The Eagle could be tuned on the
Roy> receiver end and xmit on any given xtal channel. I swapped two xtals
Roy> in the Courier so that it received on one channel and xtransmitted
Roy> on another. The wife could tune to my xtmit channel and hear me over
Roy> the local noise of traffic on the way to work, while I listened for
Roy> her on the quietest channel in town. I lived on a 'mesa' with a 4
Roy> element beam pointed down a canyon with I-5 going thru it (my route
Roy> to work in downtown SD). When she came on the air, I always turned
Roy> the volume down, since she modulated that Eagle to the limit.

Right, saw plenty of friends who had the Brownings. I had
the Tram that was similar. Tunable rx xtal tx.

RW> oTherwise, I'm hanging out doing vhf or uhf ham, and maybe some other
 RW> general snooping.

Roy> My friend Monty lived at the base of Mt Soledad in his mother's
Roy> garage. He formed a VHF and then a UHF group that I joined later.
Roy> Most of the other kids around at the time were teenagers with lots
Roy> of radio knowlege. Many of them made a career out of radio and have
Roy> their own VHF and UHF repeaters, better known as the DR0NK radio
Roy> group. Most of them are/were partiers and drunks, so the DR0 call
Roy> sign sort of works for them...

I"ve heard of that. Got my exposure to radio at school for
the blind. There's one electrical engineer works for the
feds now out of that bunch, another worked for at&T for
years, etc.

Regards,
           Richard
