i don't recall the original arguments and reasons but the founder was not
buying it and he was not happy about it at all...

which policy? you have to go back in time to read the policy that was in place
then... i have all four policy documents available here... let's take a quick
look, eh?

i'll stop there as POLICY3 (24 Oct 1986) and POLICY4 both say pretty much the
same thing... i see nothing about "nonprofit"... however, i do see where there
is/was maybe a similarity and possible desire to do like HAM radio has been
done in that one must have a license or subscription to be a member and operate
legally...
