One Thanksgiving day I, Nancy and her two kids, drove to Nancy's sisters'
house in L.A. in Nancy's El Dorado. I drove on the way home, because it
was after dark and Nancy wasn't comfortable in all the holidy traffic on
I-5. A little south of San Clemente, we were passed by a Lexus or Camry,
weaving back and forth in 3 or 4 lanes of heavy holidy traffic. Obviously
a drunk driver.

When that car began to hit and run several cars in front of us, making
them run off the road or at least pull over (as most accident victims do),
we pressed on, behind that car. I put on the emergency flashers to warn
others behind us that there was peril on the road ahead. Of course,
Calfornians being Californians, most of them paid no heed to the lights.

Some of them paid the price for that (one car hit the back of the drunk
driver's car as he slammed on his brakes for some unseen object). One car
he side-swiped and ran off the road with a fire going under their hood,
somewhere around Oceanside. All of these people were either ahead of him
or came upon him as they sped by us. Nancy wanted me to pass him and get
out of his way, which I was reluctant to do in the face of what others had
experienced as they tried that.

Eventually, I-5 splits off and one part of it turns into I-805, which goes
by the Mira Mesa area of SD, where we lived at the time. When the dui
driver ran a small pickup off the road, it rolled and crashed into a
retaining wall, about 50 feet off the roadway and out of site, I stopped
to give a hand. The dui driver kept on going and crashing other cars as he
made his way into SD proper. He eventually crashed, according to the CHP
officer who came to the scene where the pickup truck crashed.

While following the dui driver, I used my Amateur Radio walkie talkie to
access a phone patch located on a mountain top in souther SD. I reported
the dui driver to the 911 operator and did so again as I helped the driver
where I stopped to help. When all was said and done, I was suppeoned as a
material witness at the dui's trial. The ADA was counting up the number of
crashes caused by the dui driver and each victim came forward. I asked the
ADA if she had the name of the driver whose car had crashed in Oceanside
and she looked on her list, but didn't find it. She excused herself and I
assume made some phone calls and found a crash on I-5 in Oceanside that
was reported, investigated, but the victim had no information to give
about the car that caused it.

Thus, I was responsible for adding one more charge to the 11 already on
the list. This was the dui's 5th DWI violation. He had stolen his BIL's
driver's license and car, then gave the license as his ID to the officers
who did the arrest in SD. Yet another charge. This time he went to prison
for 5 years instead of being released on probation.

Not me...it's a lot safer being behind the danger than in front of it.
