In my book, more is better.  Especially with no added cost.
Allowing all participants the right/privilege to use an alias
would mean an additional option for participants, with no
added cost.  Participants could choose to continue using their
real names, as that would remain a valid option.  But why deny
anybody the option to use an alias?  I can think of no valid
reason as to why any participant should be refused that option.

Individuals would continue to access fidonet by registering with
a bbs using their real names, and could use an alias when posting
messages.  The sysop would know who the participant is based on the
sysop's own logs/records.  As such, there is no deceipt.  An individual
who registers with a bbs under a fictitious name would be a totally
different story.  But that is not the issue, nor am I suggesting
individuals log on to a bbs with anything other than their real
names.

What we have in fido today is an assumption that all participants
are using their real names.  But nobody really knows (aside from those
who are doing the posting) who those real people are.  It is obvious
that a real person is typing a message and sending that message to
a bbs, the message then posted for all to see.  But what we are really
reading is not a person's name, but rather a blip on a computer monitor.
So why not do away with the facade and get rid of that silly real names
only rule?  At least that way we would be living in a realm of reality.
