Why?  What difference would it make?  Dead is dead.  Should we
make the one who did the crime a victim?  Should that individual
be drawn and quartered, as in times past?  Would it not be best
to do away with the death penalty - completely - rather than
inflict more pain and suffering on another human being?  What
is wrong with locking up the guilty in prison - for life without
benefit of parole - as the alternative to the death penalty?
Isn't that far more humane, and less barbaric?

Death by a thousand cuts might make sadists and masochists happy,
but does such a barbaric way of execution make us any better of a
people?

Two wrongs do not make a right.  Just because a killer had no concern
for his/her victim does not mean we (as a society) should lower our own
selves to his/her level.  Instead, we should make sure the guilty has
a place to stay, clothes to wear, food to eat, excellent medical care,
and cable television.  We should even provide the guilty with a pine
box for when he/she leaves prison.

We, as a society, are to say we must be "humane" when punishing the
guilty for the crimes they have been convicted of in court of law.
Being there is no "humane" way to kill somebody, the next best thing
is for us to lock them up in prison - for life without benefit of
parole.

Well, see, we don't go around executing folks who have not actually
killed anybody.  It used to be we'd execute child rapists even if the
child was unharmed, but the Supremes told us we couldn't do that any
more.  So now we lock up them child rapists in a mental institution
when they get out of prison.  That way shrinks can figure out what
makes them tick.  And just to make sure, we tell those shrinks to
take all the time they want.  So trust me when I tell you.  The
death penalty is not the way to go.  Send them to Jackson, where
there are plenty of shrinks who have lots of time on their hands.
