My experience is that stuff that is only used for emergency seldom works when
you need it. For one: if one does not develop the discipline to regularly
charge the batteries, they will be empty when you need it.

I find it much more important that others can reach ME in an emergency. Such as
when something happens to my 91 year old mother....

I know and it is of some concern to me. But not enough to switch it off.

Note the "less than". It is a rough estimate, I do not keep a record. It may
actually be less then 10.

"Less than EUR 20 a year" is not "top price". Keep in mind that there is more
than just the raw cost of the calls. There is the cost of hardware. Lats year I
bought a Nokia 6150 for EUR 50. If it lasts five years that will amount to EUR
10 a year. My first cell phone, a Sony CMD-2000 is still in working order. But
I had to replace the speaker and the battery. Now that battery is shot again
and no longer available. My second cell phone, a Siemens M35 also needed a
battery replacement twice.

Then there is the cost of the electricity to keep it charged. You may think
that is negligible but you will be surprised, especially when you leave the
charger always plugged in...
