 electronic checks are far more common here than they were 5 years ago.  Pretty
much every store you visit, you hand them a check, they run it through a
machine and hand you back the physical check after it's entered into the
system.  Debit and Credit cards are really way more common now, and I think
even my 76 year old mother has finally given up on writing checks for anything
other than bills. Unfortunately the system to do this is expensive, so it's not
common with small businesses.

 It happens from time to time, but it's pretty rare. I'm still not sure if the
mail was actually lost or the guy just forgot to send it out.

 There have been a few attempts, but due to the fact that Paypal and E-bay are
so closely tied, the others never really took off.  Even Google's pay system is
lagging very, very far behind due to the fact that E-bay rejects using them. 
Until a major player like Amazon says "hey pay us this way" there's not going
to be any sort of competing service.
