Wise words, with a slight "however".
 
Belgium is not involved in this debate, but we feel very strongly about it as
my country between 1914 and Nov.11th 1918 was the scene of fully fledged
gas-battles that killed hundreds of thousands and left millions incapacitated
(on both sides, can't control the wind).
 
My grandfather in 1917 was in the middle of such a gas attack and had his lungs
burned. He lived but never had another productive day in his life and was a
burden to society. They called him a hero though as it was related to me, since
1917 he was a very grim person, talked little, never smiled once.
 
In 1944 he got in a coughing fit and coughed-up his one function lung ...
through his nose. He died a horrorible death ... 27 years after being caught in
a gas-attack.
 
What is currently happening in Syria, my dear man, as the whole world minus
Russia expects, is that the gas that was used overthere was delivered by Putin
(or China). The Americans and UN ground-staff need to be kept away until all
traces have been removed and "put under observation by 'independant' observers"
... assuming these will be Russian.
 
The people who really are fucked by this are the lowly Syrians who've run out
of options ... and food ... and medication.
 
In a normal process, Assad would already have been removed from power but
everything that functions in his army, the cars, the tanks, the airplanes, the
helicopters, the bombs, the ammunition, the rockets ... are now delivered by
Russia and China. There's only one reason why this man has been allowed to be
where he is and this is because of Russia's unwillingness to do something about
it by blocking each and every UN Security Council resolution for over a year
now.
 
Why does Russia do this? Easy, because by supporting Assad all muslim
Tchetjenian (or how do you write it) able bodied fighters are now out of the
country fighting Assad in Syria, quite a tactic. They do not pose a problem
"in" Russia now and Putin/Medvedev can play another round of "musical chair"
with only 2 people but with 2 chairs ... they win always.
 
I will not condone violence, but when the number of victims runs into 6 figures
and over 2 million people are displaced, then the world community needs to act.
 
I'm appaled, Alex, to see how the media in Russia are still (or again?)
state-controlled and what level of propagande is again possible because too
many Russians only speak/read/write Russian and cannot deal with other news
media. I haven't said "independant", just "other" news media because none
practice truth as a virtue.
 
Too many countries are still stockpiling, and probably producing, chemical
weapons which mainly affect civilian populations. I'm certain the USA has a
humongous pile as well (probably hidden on an indian reservation, together with
the waste of 1940/50/60-era nuclear blasts).
 
As for Belgium, in the town of Houthulst there is still a military unit of some
50 men who on a daily basis make their rounds of the battlefields from 99 years
ago now and on a daily basis still return with ammunition to be destroyed, lots
of gas ammunition and they're about the only unit worldwide qualified to do
this. Last year they lost people in an explosion of such old stuff, the danger
is not gone.
 
But if the conclusion will be that in Syria a gas attack did take place and
these specialists are not called-in, then "we" know something fishy went on
that needs to be hidden for the world as these people will be able to tell what
the origin of the gas was ... and I don't think mr.Putin wants that.
 
Just an opinion though.
