Amazing is that often the people that did the deed went unpunished. In the case
of Oradour justice was served anyway a bit later when most of the members of
the Nazi outfit perished in battle.
 
SS Tank commander Joachim Peiper who commanded a fast-attack tank-unit during
the battle of the bulge was responsible for the Malmédy-Baugnez massacre. It is
remarkable how little punishment was given to such a man who survived the war.
He was mysteriously killed in 1976, probably by resistance fighters.

The Malmédy-Baugnez massacre has become very well-known among Americans. I have
visited the site several times ... it is always eerie when you are somewhere
and you realise that soil is covered with the blood of crime

Also smaller massacres occured. The Wereth-11 massacre was largely unknown
until some years ago.
 
I'm including this for the American readers. 11 American black servicemen got
isolated from their unit in the second part of December 1944 in The Bulge. They
werer taken in house by a farmer named Mathias Langer, fed and sheltered. The
conditions outside were atrocious. People sympathetic to the Nazi cause
snitched on them and the 11 were taken prisoner by the Nazis and led away. As
they were black they fell under the racial Nazi laws and instead of being
carted off as POW, they were severely tortured ... legs broken so they could
not escape, fingers cut-off, eyes cut-out with bayonets ...

The soldiers' remains were discovered 2 months later but it was not until maybe
10 years ago when the events surfaced when the daughter of Mathias Langer spoke
out and the family decided to build a small insignificant memorial on the site
on their lands where the corpses were found.
 
It was later recognized and is now an integral part of official American
ceremonies in that area.
 
What some people will do to others in times of war escapes me, I don't
understand it. We can safely say Hitler and his squad were evil but a good book
was written about this "Hitler's willing executioners" as Dachau, Auschwitz,
Sobibor, Treblinka, Bergen-Belsen and the others were run by ordinary people
who cooperated.
