Well....the democrats pulled that here one year. Although it worked in the
primary it failed in the general election. Schwartznegger was running as
governor, and some candidates in the national election the dems didn't want
elected.


So...the registrar of voters here (a democrat, of course) went through the
voting registrations, and (viola!) all those registered as `Independent' were
suddenly morphed into `American Independent', which is a party of sorts out
here.


Now, out here when you vote in a primary election, as a registered
`Independent', you can request either ballot you like, dem OR rep.


But if you're registered dem or rep OR American Independent...THAT is the
ballot you get!


So that I can choose a `democrat' ballot, vote for a candidate I KNOW can't
win...and in the general election my REAL candidate is on the ballot and has a
good chance to win.


Well....that year they handed me a primary ballot with the names of two people
on it I'd never even heard of, and wouldn't give me one of the other two
ballots. I handed the ballot back and didn't vote at all.


But walking through a mall a few weeks later there was a guy registering
people to vote in the entrance to Walmart. So I straightened my registration
out to just straight *Independent*, and got the ballot I wanted the next time.
I watch my registration when elections come up to see it doesn't get changed
again. That happened in several counties that year, and somebody in the state
capitol lost their jobs over it.

There are usually several candidates for various positions, not necessarily
all members of the traditional parties. As I said...I'm not so much voting
`republican' at times as I am voting NOT democrat. I vote in such a way as to
be AGAINST electing a democrat.
