There was one of those in So Cal desert too. I passed through there,
practically non- stop like you did, then a CHP squad car took chase
because I was carrying a small motorized two wheeler in the back seat of
my 57 Chevy convertible. He thought it was stolen, which is why he chased
me. When I told him that the trunk was packed with camping equipment and
that's the only place I had left for the bike, he wasn't too happy to hear
it, but went on his way.

A couple of years later, I thought about that incident when I was
transporting some Mexicans in the back of my pickup. I was stuck in the
desert and they helped to dig me out and with them in the bed of the
truck, that helped the traction situation in sand. I asked them where they
wanted to go from where I entered the highway and they pointed northward.
I told them that I'd only take them to the next town, as the border patrol
had an inspection station just north of it. They got out at the next town
and headed down a ravine that led westward.
