     That was an issue I do remember being questioned a lot through the 
years.... Just there seemed to be some part about it that if the sysop
modified anything, or examined other people's mail passing through there
was a chance they could be liable.  Not to mention, various court 
systems work differently.  I'd venture to say when I was in Louisiana,
and under Napoleanic code, I'd have no problem doing as I please...  
I'm not familiar enough with Mississippi law to know for sure how it 
stands.  I know a lot of things are simliar in laws for driving and
protecting yourself on your land, but beyond that I have no idea...
I'd hate to find out the wrong way...

     I suppose if you wanted to be safe, you could require anyone that 
     passes mail through your system to fill out a form, sign it, and
     mail it back to you before you allow them to send mail through your 
     system.  This would guarantee you that regardless they signed a  
     paper saying they wouldn't hold you liable...  I'd also have them
     sign that they will not route any illegal activity through your
     BBS, which is why Sysop's first had the notion to examine anything
     going through their system.  I think that might be the fine line...
     If I route a message through your system, and you don't understand
     what it's for or what it's about... I just happen to be giving 
     someone information on when to kill your governor... If you don't
     bother to examine the mail going through your system, you 
     definitely can not be heald liable for anything.  But, if you go
     digging through the mail and read a few messages and skip that one,
     or read a portion of it and not notice what I'm talking about, then
     you get supena'd and they ask you if you recognize that letter.  
     You say yes, you saw it go through your system but wasn't sure
     why I wrote it.  They may ask why you didn't investigate further
     and notify the proper authorities when you read the letter.  Then,
     they decide you're an accomplis to me and held jointly liable for
     the murdor of your governor.
