I'm not sure of what mrtgd is, I've not used that one, but referring to my 
little trick (which is really what the other programs do, and more less why 
some programs can handle so many different protocols so easy).  ftpd is a very
complicated protocol,  About the only reason anyone would try to telnet into a
ftpd server is to verify it's answering.  Even then, not sure how far you'd 
get.  ftpd (while it uses port 21), will also open at least one more port I 
believe in the range of around 65000-65999  or so.  One of the most hardest to
understand protocols, complicated as well by the fact that there's so many 
variations that can be used. (passive, active, ssl, ftps, resume, not resume, 
etc).  In a previous message I explained what I remember of the smtpd 
protocol.  I just remember the HELO and RECPT TO: commands.  RECPT TO: is what
you use to write a message. Eg.

RECPT TO: westlakegeek@yahoo.com
DATA
This is a sample message to westlakegeek@yahoo.com
.

That would send a message to me with 1 line in the body.  No subject.
tpd.... I remember hearing of it, but I'm drawing a blank.. I do remember, you
can use telnet for that one, but not sure of the details and all...  Finger 
and HTTPd is definitely telnet'able.  Finger is more less like a 1-way telnet 
session.  I think you make one line to tell it the user you wish to get the 
finger plan for, it returns it and that's it.  HTTPd is super easy via telnet,
and actually allows programmers to write utilities like wget really easy.
Eg. 

telnet www.google.com 80
GET /

Then, it'll send you the html code for google's search page.  One could then 
parse the html code and find the URL for the image google uses for the day, 
retrieve it, save the image to a file with the current date, and set it up as 
a event to be called once a day. You can then have a collection of all the 
pictures google used to advertise its self during the various holidays and 
stuff....

POP3 is much like smtp, but a little different, again I don't quite remember 
the details.  I believe you login with USER and PASS  then use RETRV followed 
by a number or LIST  to get the list of messages.  You can tell how long it's
been since I've devled in the dark side.  Besides that, most ISP's are trying
hard to do away with POP3, despite I'd rather use it than IMAP4!  They like 
IMAP4 because supposedly it's not as much of a stress on the cell phones, and
you can keep your messages on the server.  I like POP3 because when I log in
using POP3, and I go to the server, I don't HAVE to see all my messages from
the last 20 years!  My wife has >99,000 emails that I have to go through and
delete for her every so often.  She ask me every so often to find an e-mail on
her e-mail account, and I try to tell her when you don't keep EVERY SINGLE 
EMAIL, it makes it a lot easier to find something you really wanted!
