Ärende: Right up your, errrr,
=============================
Greetings Joe!

JD>>> When I first joined the Air Force, my take-home pay was $79 a
 JD>>> month.

 RW>> Wow! That's almost 11 cents/hour. (Avg 30 day month at 24hours/day =
 RW>> 720)

JD> That is take home. Taxes were deducted from the gross.

That's a little better, but not much.

JD>>> That was in 1963, and did not change much for the next few years.
JD>>> Mind you, they also fed me, and gave me shelter.

RW>> Didn't they also give you clothing and a toothbrush?

JD> Uniforms, yes. Toothbrush, only when you saw the dentist.

Wasn't that a requirement? A new recruit has to get a haircut, lift his
scrotum for the doctor and cough, and visit the dentist.

JD>>> I think that sort of stuff (unless you use temp services), should
 JD>>> be outlawed.

RW>> That sort of 'stuff' was and still is within the IRS guidelines for
RW>> contracting independent workers. If you set certain hours that they
RW>> can work or control their coming and going, then you're no longer
RW>> within the guidelines. One of my contracters liked being the boss
RW>> before I got there, so he opened at 7am while I was enjoying
RW>> breakfast. I also trusted him with a key to the place.

JD> It may be within whatever guidelines, even here where we have no IRS
JD> <G>, but that doesnt mean it is right, My opinion of course

Of course, but it does help the smallest businessman stay in business in
the face of more and higher taxes. When I first started out, I didn't
realize that there were so many taxes and fees that businesses had to pay.

JD>>> Most large companies these days, only hire part time.

RW>> And, if the minimum wage is ordered to go higher, more will join
 RW>> them.

 JD>>> Walmart included. Especially Walmart.

RW>> Most grocery chains do the same thing. Unless you're management, you
 RW>> won't work more than 36hrs/wk..

JD> The only ones that pay well, actually, and have happy employees, are
JD> those without unions, and who care about their employees.

True. A union tried to get into the National Tea Company when I worked
there as a teen. If they had succeeded, I would have quit.

JD> Costco is one such, and General Mills was another. They pay way
JD> above the minimum wage, and paid health and dental benefits as well,
 JD> with excellent coverage.

Cool.

JD>>> Contract employment is a different thing.

RW>> Before I opened my own business, I contracted my labor through
RW>> several contract employers. I used to work as an employee at Cubic
RW>> Corp in San Diego for six years. When I left there I contracted back
RW>> through an independent contract employer. That only lasted two
RW>> years, but I made a whole lot more money than had I stayed at Cubic.

 JD> You did well then.

I'd say so.

JD>>> My son started out doing that, until he got hired full time by the
JD>>> city. He works in the IT department.

RW>> Gov't employment is good because the gov't isn't paying your wages,
RW>> the taxpayers are. And you don't have to do anything to get it.

JD> They are paying my pension(s) as well <G>

Gov't is paying mine as well, but I also contributed to it over the years,
so it isn't a handout of taxpayer money taken by the gov't.

JD> As for not having to do anything for it, I'm afraid my son would
JD> disagree. He puts in long hours at times

That was a figure of speach. Most gov't employees would be making minimum
wages in the real world.

    Have a day!
