Yes, a lie is spoken by both sides. It is an information war. Kiev 
started it calling the rebels terrorists and bandits. It is more 
convenient in this case to kill people. Joseph Goebbels used the same 
terminology in relation to east-ukrainian rebels (guerrillas) during 
WW2. Weird parallels.

The Ukraine president, for instance, told that no Ukrainian planes were 
in the air at the time. It implies, actually, that the rebels 
deliberately targeted that passenger plane. It is a lie of course. The 
rebels use all kind of anti-aircraft system to survive. They are bombed 
mercilessly. If they were able to use BUK they would use it -- there is 
nothing special in it. Nobody want to die like Palestinians in Gaza. BUK 
is probably an awkward system when used against quick low-flying 
targets. If its rocket missed the close aim it has a lot fuel to 
continue its path.

In 2001, a similar Ukrainian rocket shot down a Russian plane which flew 
over the Black Sea from Israel. As you can see -- the system 
friend-or-foo did not helped. All people on the board perished.

The crime is in the other place. If the Ukrainian forces knew well that 
Russian rebels have BUK system, Ukrainians committed a heavy crime when 
they didn't close the air space over the war zone. They must be blamed 
more than the rebels.
