Priests heard confessions.  That's all.  Nothing more, nothing
less.  The stories you heard about torture and executions are just
that - stories.

The priests had to read the good news to the people, as the people
did not know how to read.  And guess who had to write all the books
and manuscripts?  You guessed it.  The priests.

If it was not for religion, mankind would still be living in caves.

Have you ever travelled to Muslim lands?  I have.  Most Muslims are
very friendly people.  Once you get to know them.  Those that aren't
you don't want to be friends with anyway.  Not much different than
peoples of other faiths when you think about it.
